12 SIMPLE WAYS TO SAVE GAS TODAY
53You've all heard about the conventional ways to save gas; keep your car tuned, tires inflated, but here are some tips you may never have thought of.
Think FUEL ECONOMY AS YOU DRIVE, how you drive has a big influence on the amount of gas you use.
1. START UP, MOVE OUT - Warming up your engine for even a few seconds is generally not needed and is a waste of gasoline. Drive moderately at an even speed for the first few miles & enough gas will have been saved to go many times that distance after the engine is warmed up.
2. DON'T TRY TO BEAT THE OTHER GUY WHEN THE LIGHT TURNS GREEN - This can DOUBLE the fuel normally required to travel the same distance.
3. SUDDEN STOPS CAN WASTE GAS - Don't ride the brake pedal when slightly slowing down.
4. CORNER DRIVING - Slow down before that curve. Don't hit the brakes in the middle of the curve and then accelerate again. This way you will reduce fuel consumption and have safer traction.
5. MOVE WITH THE FLOW - Drive with traffic and not against it. Avoid congested areas by staying in a lane where the vehicles are moving at the speed you desire. Also, you will use about nine times more fuel when you start from a dead stop then when you resume speed from 5 miles mph. Keep this in mind when approaching the lights on green.
6. MAKE LONGER TRIPS - Shorter trips are a sure mileage spoiler. Plan ahead by making one longer trip in place of several shorter trips and you can improve your miles per gallon by ONE-THIRD! That's significant savings.
7. HILLS CAN HELP - Maintain a constant pedal pressure when going over hills. The drop in speed can be recovered when you go down the other side and this saves gas.
8. DON'T IDLE - Do you know what idling gives you? 0 miles per gallon. If you are talking to someone, waiting for someone to come out of a store, or stuck in traffic for a prolonged period, shut off that engine. Here's why: an idling engine requires a richer fuel mixture that carbons up your plugs.
9. BAD ROADS - Slow down on worn, snowy, heavily rained on roads because they create rolling resistance and this costs you more gas.
10. DITCH THE EXTRA BAGGAGE IN THE TRUNK - For every 100 lbs of extra weight, you reduce your gas mileage about two percent in city driving and even more in smaller cars.
11. RIDE WITH THE WIND - A tailwind saves fuel, but a high wind uses extra fuel so reduce your speed to save gas.
12. BE A LIGHTFOOT - Maintain your speed at minimum throttle. This means that when you have reached your speed on a level road, let up very slightly on the pedal. With practice, this can add several MPG while maintaining average speed.
