If you are looking for something fun to do with a group of children when outdoor play is not possible then these two games might just fit the bill.

Game one: Ball race

Number of players: 10 plus

Items required: A tennis ball per team and a chair per child

How to play:

  1. Split the children into small teams.
  2. Sit them in a row in the chairs and give the first child in the row a tennis ball.
  3. They must hold the tennis ball between their feet.
  4. Shout ‘GO.’
  5. The children then pass the ball one to the other only using their feet.
  6. If the ball is dropped it must be returned to the beginning again.
  7. The first team to get to the end are the winners.

Game two: Shoot out

Number of players: 9 or more (one person to be the caller)

Equipment required: A football and a method of marking out two goals

How to play:

  1. Set up some form of goal around 12 feet (approx 4m) apart facing one another then place the ball in the centre.
  1. Split the children into two equal sized teams.
  2. One team then sits down along one edge of the play area, evenly spaced out between both goals.
  3. The other team positions themselves along the opposite side.
  4. Each team member is then numbered consecutively.
  5. The caller calls out any number they like.
  6. The children that have been given that number then have to run to their left, around the back of their team mates and onto the play pitch.
  7. They then kick the football through the goal posts in order to win their team a point.
  8. The player then returns to their position.
  9. To continue play the caller retrieves the ball, places it in the middle of the play area and calls a different number and so on.
  10. The first team to score 12 points is the winner.
