20 Ways to Conserve Water Around the House
78
Water is a precious resource! Let's conserve it wisely. With these simple tips you'll start feeling better about yourself and save money at the same time.
- Take Short Showers and No Baths. As you may know showers generally require less water than do baths. A full bath tub holds about 150 litres of water while a shower releases approximately 20 liters of water a minute. It would be well worth it to invest in a shower head with a flow restrictor. A flow restrictor allows you to easily shut the water off while soaping down.
- Avoid Flushing the Toilet. This doesn't mean you need to build an outhouse in the backyard but make sure to only flush the toilet when absolutely necessary. This means disposing of insects, tissues, hair, etc in the trash.
- Rain Barrels can be attached to your downspout and can save hundreds of gallons of water. The collected water can then be used to water your lawn and garden. Did you know that 800 gallons of water runs off a 1,300 square foot roof after only one inch of rainfall?
- Run a Full Wash. Don't turn on that water burning wash machine unless it's got a full load. You can save up to 1000 gallons a month!
- Water your Lawn in the Dark. Watering your lawn in the heat of the sun can lead to wasteful evaporation.
- Monitor the Water Bill for unusually high water use which may help you discover possible leaks. Try refraining from using water for two hours and check your water meter before and after. If the meter doesn't read the same numbers both times then you have a water leak.
- Upgrade Your Toilets to the newest and most water efficient models. Try putting food coloring in the toilet tank. If the coloring migrates to the toilet bowl without flushing then you have a leak. It's time to buy a new toilet which could save you up to 1,000 gallons a month.
- Mow the Lawn Tall. Adjust your lawn mower to its highest settingso that it may absorb more rain water. This way you won't need to water it as much.
- Fix the Leaky Faucet. That stubborn faucet could be losing you 150 gallons of water a week. Give it a tight turn with a wrench.
- Turn OFF Water while Brushing teeth. This could save you up to 25 gallons a month!
- Dont' Rinse the Dishwasher's Dishes. The newer dish water models don't need much help when it comes to rinsing off the dishes. Let it do its job!
- Bathe Your Young Children Together
- Use a Hose Nozzle while Washing your Car. You can save up to 100 gallons each time by shutting of the water while washing your car.
- Wash Your Clothes Cold. While washing your clothes hot much of the water evaporates into thin air!
- Water Plants Sparingly. Did you know that more plants die from too much water than too little water?
- Sweep Your Sidewalk instead of Spraying it OFF
- Fill the Fridge with Drinking Water. Too much water is wasted from the tap while waiting for the water to cool down everytime you need a drink.
- Turn Down your Water Heater if your house will be empty for two or more days. Installing a ready made installation kit around your water heater or even wrapping duct around it can save up to 10% on water heating costs
- Insulate your Water Pipes. This way you'll llose less water to evaporation and your water will heat up faster.
- Don't let the Water run while washing your face or shaving.
