http://hubpages.com/hub/Chicago-Bears-2009-NFL-Draft-Review

The Chicago Bears started mini-camp today. As of now, before the evaluation of the players from mini-camp, they still have many positions to fill. The most pressing needs (Not in any particular order) are: WR, O-Line, DE, back-up QB, and the secondary. I would say that WR and O-Line are the positions they need the most help at. They released WR-Marty Booker and will not bring back WR-Brandon Lloyd, whom is a free agent. OT-John Tait has retired. OT-Fred Miller is a free agent whom will not return. OT-John St. Clair is a free agent whom they are trying to bring back, and the Bears just released OG-Terrance Metcalf. Chicago has signed two free agents so far this year. OL-Frank Omiyale, from the Carolina Panthers. He is a young, versatile lineman who can play any position on the line. The Bears are sticking him at Left Guard for the mini-camp. They also have signed S-Josh Bullocks, from the New Orleans Saints, to a one-year deal. He will line up at Free Safety. If they re-sign St. Clair, they will move him back to RT, as last years #1 pick Chris Williams will start at LT. Even if they don't re-sign St. Clair, this is how I would MOCK draft for the Bears in the first 6 rounds. Only 6 because they don't have a 7th rounder. They traded it last year to the Tampa Bay Bucs for G-Dan Buenning. The compensation picks haven't come out yet either. They should receive at least 2, maybe 3, comp. picks because they lost 3 FA and did not sign any last year.

Update: The Bears received 3 comp. picks, one at the end of the 3rd round and 2 at the end of the 7th round. I have updated the Mock to include these picks. They lost St. Clair to Cleveland. But they signed a replacement, oddly enough, from Cleveland. His name is Kevin Shaffer, and I think he is a better player than St. Clair. He is younger and a real mauler in the run game. Also, they signed SS- Glen Earl, who has been out of the league the last 2 years. He played for the Texans, where he was coached by new Bears secondary coach Jon Hoke. He was signed after a tryout during the Mini-camp and will most likely compete for a back-up safety spot. To respond to comment below, the Bears moved Zachary Bowman to Free Safety. He looked pretty solid in Mini-camp, and further solidifies the position. Making safety a lower priority in the draft. This draft is really deep at the OT and WR positions. Which is why I waited until the middle rounds to look at tackles.

I will be giving 3 possibilities in the 1st round and then 2 possibilities each round there after.

1st Round: WR- Jeremy Maclin- MO - A play-maker who can also be great in the return game while he learns(Not that it is needed, but could give Hester a rest every once and awhile). If, and that's a big if, he falls this far. Assuming J-Mac is not available at this pick then, WR-Kenny Britt - Rutgers, is a great choice. He has all the tools to be like Terrell Owens (Size, speed, hands, etc), without being the head-case that T.O. is. Bears Offensive Coordinator was at Britt's Pro Day, which shows that they are interested in him or Tiquan Underwood, later in the draft.

WR- Hakeem Nicks- NC - He is a polished WR. Runs solid routes, has great hands, and fit's into what Jerry Angelo said, "We are looking into the PREMIUM players at the WR position, in free agency and the draft, so yes, it’s a position that we are really looking at". Weight gain between Indy Combine and Pro Day is a concern though.

WR- Percy Harvin- UF - He is a play-maker and is very tough. Time at RB shows he can take a hit. Might need work at route running (Showed during his Pro Day that he can run great routes). Is known to have a BIG ego, which could scare some teams off. T.O. has shown what a "me first" attitude can do to a team. Although, Harvin has always put the team first, all the way back to high school, he has been known to argue with coaches. Again more of what J.A. said, "What we want are potentially starting wide receivers. We have a nucleus of receivers that we feel good about in terms of twos, threes, fours and fives." I do not like Darrius Heyward-Bey. Speed guys like him always seem to fail. The other 4 receivers above are a much better and safer pick.

2nd round: C/G/RT- Max Unger- Oregon - Very versatile(which never hurts), adds more depth & youth to the offensive line. He can play every position on the line, except LT. Possible successor to Olin Kreutz, which should be considered in the near future. This is a strong draft for centers.

CB- Mike Mickens- CIN - He would provide more depth and competition at the CB spot. Possibly slide in as the #4 CB behind Charles Tillman, Nathan Vasher, and Corey Graham. Very productive in college.

3rd round: OLB- Tyrone McKenzie- USF - A good fit in the Tampa-2 system. Provides depth and competition at Hunter Hillenmeyer's OLB spot. Good in pass coverage.

DE- Paul Krueger- Utah - Prob. gone by this pick, but someone always falls. He won't, but hoping he does. He dominated the Sugar Bowl, and would fit in great as a "wave" DE and possible replacement for Adewale Ogunleye.

3rd Round (Comp. Pick): WR- Ramses Barden- Cal Poly - He will be a tremendous Red-zone threat. He is 6'6", 229lbs. Has shown in workouts that he can catch and run solid routes. Solid forty time for someone his size, 4.54. I liken him to Vincent Jackson, who plays for the Chargers. The type of guy that a team may really fall in love with though, and might be drafted higher.

TE- Sean Nelson- Southern Miss - Although not a position of need, this is a best available player scenario. Desmond Clark is not getting any younger and will be a FA in 2010. Again, not a need pick, would be groomed to take over for Clark, if this guy is available here, they need to really look at taking him. I really feel that this guy is going to be a real good pro. They could then cut Clark after the '09 season and save money. Nelson will be a good all-around TE, like Clark. He is fast, ran a 4.52 forty. Has shown in workouts and Senior Bowl that he can really catch and block. Does need to add 10-15lbs in order to fulfill his full blocking potential. Wouldn't mind a safety pick here instead. But it is no longer a priority to draft a S in the higher rounds, with Bowman, Bullocks, Steltz, Earl, Payne, and even D. Manning who has played S before. That is a real solid group. Bears would be more likely to draft a safety sometime in the 4th round, and beyond. They have had a lot of luck doing that. Chris Harris, Mike Green, Craig Steltz, Kevin Payne, and Zach Bowman were all drafted 4th round or lower.

4th round: OT- Troy Kropog- Tulane - He blocked for Matt Forte. Tulane runs a similar offensive system as the Bears. That is why Forte picked it up so fast last year. Kropog is a great run blocker and will also pick up the system fast.

OT- Alex Boone- Ohio State - A right tackle that can provide depth. Is strong, and solid in both pass and run protection. Played well at Ohis State. Could be drafted as low as the 6th round though.

5th round: OT- Jason Watkins- UF - Depth, will really develop after a few years in the league. Solid technician. Does need to get stronger, as he only did 19 reps of 225lbs.

QB- Graham Harrell- Texas Tech - He really had a solid Senior Bowl and is proving that he is not just a system QB. Also, JA said, "we will be looking for a QB to develop and not take reps away from Orton. Would compete for the 3rd QB spot with Brett Basanez. Type of player that could "pay-off" after a couple of years in the league and become a starter or trade-bait.

6th Round: DE- Stricker Sylak- MO - Good pass rusher. Has a non-stop motor. The Bears like to take pass rushing ends in the middle to late rounds, to fit into the "wave".

LB- Nic Harris- Oklahoma - He will be a special teams ace. Played S and LB in college, showing his versatility.

7th Round (Comp. Pick): CB- Christopher Owens- San Jose St. - Great later round pick. Nice fit in Bears system. Good run support corner (Which is a must in Bears defense), with solid cover skills. Has really shown up on scouts radar's with performance at Indy combine, as well as Pro Day.

FB- Brannan Southerland- Georgia - Create some comp. at the FB position where there is no-one behind McKie (Jason Davis did not perform well last year when McKie got hurt). Can catch and also play special teams, which is a requisite for a late round pick. He ran a 4.69 forty and did 28 Reps. Good all-around player. Would def. be an upgrade over Davis, as well as McKie. I personally wouldn't mind if the Bears took him as high as the 5th round, as he most likely won't available in the comp. pick range.

7th Round (Comp. Pick): ILB- Anthony Felder- Cal - Can add depth behind Urlacher as well as special teams. Great fit in Tampa-2 system. Strong (28 reps of 225lbs) and fast (Ran 4.69 forty) for his size. Kinda weird that he had some of the same stats as FB- Southerland (workout wise).

OG- Travis Bright- BYU - Solid late round developmental prospect. Strong, did 34 reps, which would help with run blocking. Provides more youth, competition, and depth.

Possible Free Agent Pick-ups (I will provide 2 players @ each position, except K & P.):

QB- Chase Patton- Missouri: Big, 6'5" 224lbs, with a solid arm. Good developmental pick-up. Was back-up to Chase Daniel and could end up being a story like Matt Cassel. & Todd Boeckman- Ohio St.: Also big, 6'5" range 220+lbs. Good leader, decent arm, solid intangibles.

RB- Antone Smith- FSU: Fast, ran a 4.32. Just under 5'9", 193lbs. Could push Wolfe. Not sure if he is willing to play special teams, like Wolfe. But as a FA, I would be willing to do anything. & P.J. Hill- Wisconsin: Power back, who had a good college career. Good practice squad candidate.

FB- Marquez Branson- Central Arkansas: Big bruiser, solid blocker. 6'2", 247lbs, ran a 4.68 forty. & Frank Summers- UNLV: Smaller, in terms of height, only 5'9", but is 241lbs and ran a 4.63 forty. Good short-yardage threat. Not sure of hands.

WR- Tommy Saunders- Missouri: Athletic freak, would be solid 6th receiver who can also play special teams. For more info, check out my Missouri Pro Day Hub as well. & Greg Orton- Purdue: Good height, decent hands, solid college career. 6'3" 207lbs, strong, did 22 reps. Translates into possibly being a good run blocker. I have not seen tape on him, so he may already be a good run blocker. Also, Greg Carr- FSU: Big 6'6", 217lbs, 4.62 forty. A big red-zone threat. OK, not great college production. But he really did not have a good QB.

TE- Zach Miller- Nebraska-Omaha: Strickly a receiving TE. 6'4", 233lbs, ran a 4.56 forty. & Kevin Brock- Rutgers: OK in both facets of the game, blocking & receiving. Developmental prospect.

OL- OG- Brandon Walker- Oklahoma: Solid G, 6'3", 306lbs, did 26 reps of 225lbs. Is rated the 16th-20th G, depending on where you look. Border-line draft-pick. But if a team falls in love with him, they will draft him, rather than take the chance of losing him to another team in FA. & OT- Phil Trautwein- UF: Solid college career. Played in the SEC, which never hurts. Has played in a lot of games, but only started a little more than a seasons worth. Another border-line draft pick. Has injury history with foot. Should definitly be available as a FA.

DL- DE-Julius Williams- UConn: somewhat short, only 6'2", 263lbs, but fast, ran a 4.62 forty. Good speed rushing end for Bears system. & DT- Roy Miller- Texas: Most likely will be drafted. Shorter DT, 6'1", 310lbs, ran a 4.98 forty. But extremely strong, did 36 reps. Cone and other drill numbers were a little disappointing.

LB- ILB- Spencer Adkins- Miami: Shorter, only 5'11", 230lbs, but fast, ran a 4.54 forty. Solid college production, would be nice fit in Bears system. & OLB- Robert Francois- Boston College: Good size, 6'2", 244lbs, and fast for size. Ran a 4.58 forty. Fits Bears system and good special teams kinda guy.

CB- Glover Quin- New Mexico: solid size, 5'11", 204lbs, strong, did 22 reps and good speed, ran a 4.50 forty. & Greg Toler- St. Pauls College: A guy from a really small program that has only been around for 3 years. Has really caught the eyes of scouts lately, and might not be available in FA. 5'11", 185lbs, 4.49 forty.

S- FS- Lendy Holmes- Oklahoma: Solid career, 6', 205lbs, 4.68 forty. Other work-out numbers were not as great. DE-Stryker Sulak had better, or really close, numbers to what Holmes put up. Type of player that would be best for practice squad. & SS- Jamarca Sanford- Mississippi: 5'10", 214 lbs, ran a 4.46 forty at his pro day and is really strong, did 29 reps. Again, another guy who played in the SEC. Speed and strength are good fits in Bears system, as safety's have to cover a lot of ground.

K- Pat McAfee- West Virginia: Most liely to be drafted, as someone stated below. But with K's there is always a chance that they won't be drafted. Would also take a look at Jeff Wolfert- Missouri: He leaves Mizzou as the all time NCAA percentage leader in FG made.

P- Chris Miller- Ball State: 45.4 yard average, and had 23 kicks inside the 20.

These are players that I think would look good in a Bears uniform. Most of these players should be available where I have them being drafted. When it comes to the free agents, most are being projected to be 7th round picks or free agents. All fit into the Bears offensive and defensive systems. I know that there are multiple players in this Mock that play the same position. But I put them there as options. If the Bears draft one player, at one position, in one round. Then they would obviously draft another player at a different position, in another round. Also, for inside information on the University of Missouri's Pro Day, check out my other Hub. I have read a few comments on people wanting the Bears to select a Safety. I would like this as well, and Bears fans should be happy to hear that the Bears scout that was at the Missouri Pro Day put in extensive time with S- William Moore. He talked to him for an extended period of time and also put him through workouts. Please leave comments. Thank you!

I am an avid Bears fan. I am also surprised n oone left you a comment. But here are my thought on the NFL Draft for the Bears...Thier defense is what we Chciagoans prided ourselves on for as long as i can remember. Last season, it was not as great or fearsom as i would have liked it to be, especially the passing game. You know, if we want a chance to make it to the Super Bowl, it will be all on the defense. Urlacher is getting old. He still has some good speed, but he is not crushing defenders as much as earlier in his career. I believe this defense needs a new pint of blood, and that comes at thier remiaining linebacker spot. I would have hope that the Bears would get Aaron Curry, but he has been projected for top 5 pickings. So therefore, i really, really, with a lot of heart, hope that the Bears draft Brian Cushing. Imagine our linebacking core, Briggs, Urlacher, and a crushing, versatile linebacker in Cushing. Along with our Defensive line, we would crush all running game. (I also believe that our passing defense will be better next season, it all comes down to injuries.) After Cushing, i believe the Bears priority should be O-Line. Then maybe Reciever.

Sorry, for the long comment, i LOVE the Bears.

Blue and Orange all the way

I agree with the reciever selections.

I just see the bears still picking a saftey up 2nd round.

i know they made a great pick up with bullocks and they have kevin payne but im sure there will be at least one quality saftey or even corner to pick up in the second round!

but i never doubt jerry angelo. the GM. He is a good guy and all his picks in the draft have done something for the Da Bears.

I love the bears. its time they get back up on top!

As a longtime Bears fan from the UK I am not as clued up with the propspects in the later rounds of the draft - so this helps a lot - thanks Rob.

With the addition of Schaffer I'd be surprised if JA doesnt use his 1st rounder on a WR, and hope he goes for a Hands guy rather than a speed guy like Heywood-Bey. 2nd & 3rd round he should then get DE, OT and then CB.

I am surpried you put a TE in there... I'd be more than happy with the 3 TEs we have. Especially in the 3rd round where I would love to see a Corner or even Safety. Another Tackle or Centre, a QB, a DB and a LB to round it out.

What do you reckon are the chances that JA trades down from his 2nd round to two third? Or even trades up?

I'd love it to play out like that, but I would be surprised. Could see Nicks being available there...but the Bears don't need Harvin, they need someone who can catch a slant or a Dig, get drilled, and come out of it ok. I would love to see Harrel and Nick Harris fall into thier laps in the later rounds. I think you're dreaming, though if you think that those two offensive linemen or Pat McAfee will not be drafted. McAfee is kicker 1A next to the kid from Fla St. He'll be drafted.

Darrick  says:

I think thay you thought this through for a while. While I like The reciever selections of Kenny Britt and Ramses Barden, I thnk that a CB, TE, or a DE that high in the draft isn't necessary. I don't think that the BEars really need a saftey that high. Remember that the Bears not only signed Earl and Bullocks, but they also moved one of their CBs to the safety position. The name escapes me now for some reason but he was the one that had that excellent game against the vikings I think and tore his bicep muscle during that game and was out for the remainder of the year. I also think that they should draft versitile people who can make a huge impact on special teams because when we lost Brendan Ayenbajeyo (forgive the spelling), our special teams unit was below average or at least what we have become accustom to. Everything else is great.

Ricahrd Smith(again)   says:

Raiderfan, someone can know a lotabout football and not be in shape. Thats like saying you can't be a good swimmer with one arm missing. But if you research, you can find a lot of great one armed swimmers.

Secondly, the Bears could improve at basically EVERY position. (Except maybe MAYBE running back, tightends, D-Line,) But i believe those are just small wounds to the body. The absolute biggest factor is our overall defense. I want the best defense in the league again. Brian Urlacher and our d-line is gettin old. Draft a kickass outside linebacker, then offensive linemen, becuase O-Line is the most important part of any offense. (If you wanna argue about that, i will.)Hopefully, the bears will get one of the abundance of free-agent old guys at wide reciever to teach our young recieving core.

Yea, that is what i think the bears should do. But then again, i could be wrong.

Richard (again)   says:

yo Darrick, i think your talkin about Bowman, or Hamilton...

Yea, were a bit satacked at Safety...I will still miss Mike Brown...: /...I think the bears need ONE o-lineman in the draft...right after the Outside linebacker i want...then they can try and patch up the other positions...Im excpting a lot out of Stelts and Bennet this season, actually...If i talk/type too much, i will stop lols.

Not talking/typing too much. I appreciate the comments. I agree that when it comes to any football team, not only the Bears, that it starts with both lines. If I were to build a team I would def. start inside and work my way outside. You can have any QB you want, but if you don't have a line to give him time, he is worthless. I think Detroit has proved that. Same goes with a RB, no line= no yards. A good defensive line will put pressure on the QB, and tie up blockers for the LB's to take down the RB. A good DL will also go a long way in making the DB's look, and perform better. While I do agree that we need a LB at some point, WR is a more pressing need in my opinon. I am curious to see what J. Williams or Roach could do over a full season, instead of Hillenmeyer. Although a LB would start and produce better as a rookie, than most WR's. Agree that the Bears also must continue to build O-line, especially in this draft where OL is very deep. DE is also a concern for me, as M. Anderson and Ogunleye will be FA's after this season. I know Anderson for sure, not sure about Ogunleye, although he is getting older every day. If Anderson does not turn the corner under Marinelli, and they don't re-sign him if he does. Then I think the Bears will be in real trouble at DE. DT is solid, although I like D. Dvorchek, he is just to much of an injury liability. But with T. Harris, A. Adams, M. Harrison, I. Idonijie, and M. Toeina, that is a good rotation. I would really like to see what Toeina can do. He looked pretty good in the limited action he got at the end of the season in 2007. Another late round corner would be good, to push the bottom 2 CB's on the roster. Really showed when either Vasher or Tillman is hurt, that we really don't have anyone. I do like C. Graham as the 3rd CB, and think D. Manning is a solid 4th, but might be better as a swing player (CB and S). I think the Bears can get a solid LB in the 3rd or 4th round. But to be honest, I would love to get MLB-B. Siler-UF next year as Urlacher's replacement. I def. think he could be had anytime in the 1st round, as of now. I too think that Bennett is going to have a better season than most think. So many Bears fans do not realize that most rookie WR's do not produce. As it is a position that is a "react" position. You can not react, until you have the playbook down pat, and do not have to think about what you are doing. The coaches said that towards the end of the season, he was really starting to do that in practice. I am really excited for this season and think the Bears def. have a chance to make the play-offs and win the NFC North.

I also agree with you that someone like WR- T. Holt would look good in Bears uniform, and help the younger guys out. He only has 1-2 decent years left though, and think signing him to a 1-2 year deal, with incentives, would be a good thing. Not sure of anyone else, I truly think that M. Harrison is done. And with that gun thing hanging over his head, it is not a good situation. Drafting a WR in the first 2 rounds, and adding a big, red-zone threat of a WR later, would solidify the WR for years to come. I am just sick of R. Davis always seeming to drop passes and having stop-gap guys signed every year. Also sick of the offense being in the bottom third of the league every year. Letting R. Rivera go was a big mistake, but with Lovie calling plays again this year, that will be a big improvement. Here's to the Bears once again being the dominant defensive team that they have been before, while also being in the top third of the league on offense. GO BEARS!!!!

So, their current QB will get them to the playoffs? Forget the WR. Get a solid QB and keep building that defense even stronger. Oh and a RB

Thanks for the comment. But, I think that Kyle Orton should be given one last shot. Where the Bears are drafting, a QB of that nature might not be available. Orton showed last year, before he got hurt, that he can be a viable NFL QB. Now that the line is solidified, at least on paper, he needs more weapons. As other teams were really keying on G. Olsen and D. Hester the last third of the season. I think they will draft a QB, just not until at least the 4th round. Also, did you forget about Matt Forte at RB. Plus, they just re-signed Kevin Jones. Yes he had a knee injury, but that is an injury that takes at least 1-1 1/2 years to get over. Many NFL RB's have shown that they can come back from knee injuries, and Jones was a good back before the injury. The last game Detroit won, was the last game that Jones played in. Although it is a TEAM game, I just can't help but think that has something to do with it.

I agree with you about Bransen of Central Arkansas and Quin-both bruisers that could be picked up late. Bransen COULD be that guy when you need 1-3 yards and make a statement when you do it. A smash mouth kind of player as is Quin.

Nice article / moch draft. I live here in Chicago and being a football fan, I watch the Bears regardless if I like them or not. Truth be told...I am a Cowboys fan. I do root for the Bears to win other then when they are playing the Cowboys. Anyway, the bears have this weird idea that Hester is a #1 receiver and he is not. I liked him so much better as a return man and since he has been taken out of the roll, he has disappeared. The Bears need to figure out who they can get as a receiver and maybe come up with another trade to bring in someone who at least you know you can count on. I know Braylon Edwards and Anquan Boldin are available, but they are a little too high priced for the bears. I think they can get some use out of Marvin Harrison, he isn't what he used to be, but he will give you some quality receptions. Other guys like Torry Holt (he may sign with the Ravens) could also be a good #2 or #3 option.
