For the Federal Tax Return: April 15, 2009 Midnight

This is the 2009 tax return deadline. It doesn’t matter if you efile or send it by standard mail. Of course there are exceptions to most rules and the IRS will consider giving you a six month extension if you apply for one. You have to use Form 4868. If you’re granted an extension then, it will be due by midnight October 15th, 2009.

For the State Tax Return: April 15, 2009 Midnight

Okay, this is usually the deadline for most states. Of course there are exceptions regarding state filing. I’m talking about natural disasters, floods, hurricanes and tornadoes. When a terrible disaster strikes, the state will determine if the tax payers are granted an extension.

For 2009, the tax payers of Minnesota and North Dakota have experienced the disaster of floods so, they have been granted a six month extension. Be sure to check with a reputable online tax preparation software company like Turbo Tax to see if your county qualifies for the extension. The entire state was not flooded so, in all fairness, it only applies to specific counties.

For All Procrastinators or Disorganized People: You can file for an extension

You can give yourself some more time. How does October 15th sound? You have to fill out Form 4868. It’s the application of automatic extension of time to file U.S. individual income tax return. Don’t panic, you do not need to provide an explanation to Uncle Sam. When you file the form, you have an extension.

You are not completely off the hook yet. There are strict rules and you must do this the correct way. Filing for this extension can only be done through the old fashioned print and mail method. You cannot efile Form 4868. Maybe you don’t have the tax return completed by April 15th but, you better have Form 4868 mailed by that date!
