Good News for Folks in Minnesota and North Dakota

The IRS is giving the victims of the recent severe flooding some relief. If you live in Minnesota or North Dakota, you have an extra month to file your tax return. That’s a one month extension for you to file your tax returns or pay any taxes that might be due. This is also true of the state taxes owed.

The tax authorities in those states are also granting a one month extension. That is also for filing and paying. Now I have more good news, no late fees or interest due on those taxes. I think it would be a good idea to visit Turbo Tax Online to check for your specific county. Not all counties of Minnesota and North Dakota were flooded so, make sure your county has been granted the extension. Make sure you write on the printed paper tax return “severe storms, flooding” for both the federal and state returns.

April 15th, 2009, Of Course

Of course we all know by now the official deadline date for filing your 2009 tax return is April 15th, 2009. There are exceptions to the rule though and you may request an extension. If you happened to miss the deadline in April, get busy and take care of this as soon as possible. Believe me folks this is nothing to procrastinate about. It is very important for you to file your tax return as soon as possible.

If you owe money and you just don’t have it, you must still file your return. You will be hit with a penalty and have to pay interest but, it’s better than being hauled off to jail. If on the other hand, you have a refund coming and haven’t filed your return according to the deadline, you may lose your refund. You can check with Turbo Tax for more information on the filing deadlines and dates for filing tax returns for 2009.
