2012-Mayan Astrology Sparks Apocalyptic Mania-New Age Visions

2012 December - Setting Dates
December 2012 has become the most recent date for the "end of the world", "inflection for change", "earthly conflagration" or "peaceful new age cosmic torrent". Why do I pose so many possibilities? Because right now, you can go to the internet, churches, chat rooms, book stores or your local cafe and find people who believe some of the above and more.
From using Edgar Cayce as an authority, to Bible-thumping, armageddon-believing preachers, from New Age Prophets to Astro Authors, where ever you go right now - and for the next three years, you will find people with a "specific belief in 2012".
What Do You Believe About 2012? - Check out Christofer's New Website: www.astrologygetalong.com.
Don't laugh. As time goes on over the next 3 years, someone will ask you what you believe about 2012, and you will have to come up with a belief, or sound terribly uninformed! What do people believe? And how has this all happened?
Public awareness of the Mayans, and specifically the "shamanistic priesthood" of the Mayans who were amazingly atuned to the stars and had a specific astrology that measured earthly happenings, has skyrocketed with recent research and books about an "end of the world" scenario that is amazingly - just a turn around the corner in cosmic time. In a little while, scholars, thinkers and writers have put together a body of quotes from Merlin to the I Ching, from the Koran to Sufi Seers, from Kabbalistic talk of the "end of days" to St. John's visions.
Never before has "date setting" for the "end of days" met with so many parties' ear perking attention. How did Mayan Astrology meet with such sudden credibility and attention? That is a story in itself. Suffice it to say, that the Mayans have gone from a group that was - in the public mind, just a collection of old South American peoples, as in the "Mayans, Aztecs and Incans" to a far sighted group of astrological seers who were prophetic geniuses. The technicality of the prophecy has to do with the coming together of astrological events all at the same time. One of the cycles is said to be concluding after 26,000 years. This makes many people from very divergent philosophical points of view perk up. People who decry astrology, like fundamentalist Christians, have their own view of when "Christ is going to return"; and even though they don't believe in astrology, the 2012 scenario has a harmonic ring to it, even for them. Those who have left fundamentalist Christianity and have now become New Agers are in a particular state of anticipation, since both their former and their present systems have a belief in "something dramatic happening in the not too distant future".
Nobody Without An Opinion
The beliefs about what is going to happen at this key moment in astrological time differ greatly. And that is what all the rage is about and the book writing and professional speculating has begun in a furor. They range from a gentle peaceful warm tidal change in consciousness, to the flipping of the earths on its poles and the drowning of humanity in floods and the ruination of the world in earth shaking earthquakes. This ready group of collected belief systems all have a reason to believe that the world is facing some dramatic change.
The groups would not be together under any other topic. Environmentalists, Christian Fundamentalists who don't beleive in astrology and New Agers who have a happy view of the future, traditional groups that are atuned to the political and military situation in the Middle East, all have a ready ear for what these long dead Mayans constructed long ago in their particular astro scenario.
The reason there is such credibility is that they apparently were extremely accurate about their predictions, and even predicted their own demise. Now hundreds of years later, scholars having taken a new look at their systems have determined that they might have predicted a mighty change for the planet. This gives them a kind of air tight sanctification. They are dead and gone. They predicted their own end. They must be right again. Then they pile in with all of the other "end of the world" scenarios, and you have a ready made concentration of human consciousness on the next three years!
Logging Our Anticipatory Longings
Wow. You can not say that many people will not be excited about this. I will be devoting one of my upcoming pages to the speculation and writings about 2012 on my upcoming website: http:www.Astrologygetalong.com.
Being a student of not only the current religious, political and social context that we find ourselves in, I also am highly inclined to make an observation about the human psyche. There is something lodged in our heads about impending calamity and not so far off doom. It probably finds its origin in our ancient fear of "what tribe is coming over the hill to ruin our lovely village?" There is nothing worse that you can do to a person than to arouse in them a nascent fear that is already there just waiting like an embedded bug's egg, waiting to wake him up every morning with new pupal growth. So now we have a Movie coming out to do just that! That's right. Coming to a theatre near you is a movie to terrify you about 2012. If you wish to go, go. Here at this site, we will keep a watch on what is written and what is felt about this topic.
In 1,000 AD, there was a general consciousness that that particular date would be an excellent time for Christ to return. Unfortunately, they were not in on the heavenly memo that called it off. When prophecies become rife, that is usually the time to get up and go to work and do the blessed task of daily living. It is my opinion that in December of 2012, we will all be getting up, going to work and doing the blessed task of daily living. I will hopefully see you there. In the meantime, we will keep our ears to the ground for real and imagined events.

Wait til you see the television "line up" this season......
2012 is everywhere!!!! Plus the movie 2012 is coming out too......from the guys that did "Independence Day." Will be interesting to see how it is "marketed" and presented. G
Thanks for the response. Yes. This going to be big for the next 3 years. I think its going to be just one big disaster movie.
Remember the predictions when the year 2,000 rolled around? Computers wouldn't work, etc. We survived that.
I think that HappyHer has it right. Let's all give more thought to living each and every day as though it is our last.
This was great, watched that movie Knowing and thought 2012 is toooo close!
great hub, very thought provoking
Thanks much. There are so many parties out there who are chiming in, that it seems like it is something we must all agree upon by acclamation. By my way of looking through ironic glasses and historic frames of reference, it is usually when everyone agrees that something can NOT happen, that it means that it will.
This subject is becoming quite a popular topic lately. I don't know what to think about it. It is quite fascinating to study the Mayans and how damn near every single prediction they ever made has come true - for thousands of years. I don't compare it at all to the Y2K scenario because that is all such recent history, only having existed since the dawn of the computer age. One interesting thing I learned recently, is that there is also an ancient Asian text (Japanese? I'm not sure which one) that makes the exact same prediction about 2012. All I can say, is if the world does end - I sure hope it happens fast!
Good stuff! I will haft to check out your website. Also, you may want to check out my take on it @http://www.hubpages.com/hub/The-Feathered-Christ I take a look at the Toltec who have greatly influenced the Mayan. I did not find anything in my research that said that the Mayan predicted there own demise. Were did you find that?

Wonderful Hub Christofer! I remember when people thought the world was going to end in 1983, wow, people were really freaking out.
As far as 2012, who knows? God promised in the Bible to never destroy the earth again after the "great flood", so if you follow the Bible, you might want to remember that promise. Even the return of Christ is not supposed to destroy the earth, just all the sinners will be left behind to do it instead - supposedly.
No, if we are going to destruct, it will be because of us. The Mayans ended their calendar at 2012. Did any of them say that was the end of the world? If so, I didn't hear them.
Their calendar ended. Maybe they didn't have time to complete it, maybe they thought 2012 was far enough to go into the future, or maybe it was intended to just start over again at year zero due to a formation of the planets as they projected them to be.
A few other cultures apparently had calendars that ended then as well, again, simply an ending to a calendar, not a mention of that was "The End".
So, when asked what I believe, I will say I believe in Free Will of Man. I believe if we all perish, it will be because of us, not because of the planets, or God, or any outside source.
Why not just live every day as if it is your last? That way, when and if the "end" does come, at least you won't have a lifetime of regrets left behind.
