250 Essential Old School Hip-Hop Records (1979-1990ish)

By DJ Funktual

This is a comprehensive list of songs from the Pre-Skool Hip-Hop era that are essential to all B-Boys, DJs and plain old nostalgia lovers. These songs helped the art form grow during it's infantile stages and several of them were pivotal in it's massive growth spurt between 1988-1993. I had made an all-inclusive list of the 250 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs of All-Time songs but it lacked depth because it is virtually impossible to measure Jay-Z against say...Afrika Bambaataa. So I have separated the "Golden Age of Hip-Hop" a/k/a the emergence of Biggie, 2Pac, Dre & Snoop, Nas, Jay-Z, Wu-Tang, DMX, Redman, Cypress Hill, The Pharcyde, etc.

I will be making a list specifically for the Golden Age a/k/a everything leading up to Lil' Jon's Get Low. The last album included in that list will be Speakerboxxx / The Love Below by OutKast which devoured the competition at the time and sent the entire game back home to rewrite their shit while Kanye & the drty drty took over.

But forget about that for now, and sorry I brought it up because we are in a breakin' on a box state of mind. Kool Herc brought his Kingston soundsystem roots to the Bronx, NY in 1973 when he first began doing parties. He, of course influenced the trifecta of MC Grandmaster Caz, Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash. The other elements of hip-hop began emerging as well. Graffiti began to dominate and beautify the otherwise dreary looking subway cars of New York City. Movies like Wild Style, Beat Street, Krush Groove started appearing and a new culture was born.

Let's take a walk 'round the block. See who's hangin out....

The 250 Greatest Old School Hip-Hop Jams '79-'91 !

Remember "Rappin' Duke"?

Duh-hah, Duh-hah,

You thought that hip-hop

would take it this far. Suckas!

This list is a form of entertainment and songs are not really ranked on merit, besides what would be the point of listing every Rakim & KRS joint in a row at the top? Some are at the bottom not because they are worse, but more of a "betcha thought I forgot" kinda thing. I've intentionally left 25 songs off this list because I want you. the public, to participate. This list reflects my tastes but I certainly left a lot of songs off so that you can nominate. So get a pen and pad and get ready to fill out the definitive 250 Greatest Old School Hip-Hop Records!

Some groups were ahead of their time but part of the new school movement like A Tribe Called Quest and the Geto Boys. They shall be honored during the Golden Age instead.

If you were looking for Rumors by the Timex Social Club or Buffalo Stance by Neneh Cherry, then yeah I gotta laugh a little. Nah man, we are looking for better than Funky Cold Medina or "God forbid!" Yo' Little Brother by Nolan Thomas, a song so bad that it has to be seen to be believed.

"Yo'" - This Will NOT Be Accepted ! Funny/Sad as hell though. LOL

The Final 25 Spots belong to the Hip-Hop Nation!

You decide....

Do You think I need to "Go See The Doctor" for leaving off too many Moe Dee classics?

Did I leave out one of your favorites?

.....like say....Heavy D & The Boyz?

or Steady B or Antoinette?

need more 2 Live Crew? more Gang Starr?

Well, then YOU decide which track should represent them.

Smurf Trek anyone? Woppit?

and where do we place Ice Ice Baby in the grand scheme of things???

PLEASE HIT THUMBS UP IF YOU ENJOYED YOURSELF! Peace, DJ Funktual

Educational, as always. I wish I hadn't been unborn/less than 5 yrs old at the time these were all kickin'. I think I'd have a much greater knowledge and appreciation of them today. I love me some damn hip-hop, no doubt, but the old school still manages to elude my good taste. It seems like I'll be a golden-age hip-hop child forever.

Oh and can I get a f&%# Kanye anyone? Seriously...that dude needs to bite me, hard.

Fight The Power is at 14, Black Steel is at 37 and Don't Believe The Hype is at 50.

What exactly ARE you talking about?

DJ Iron Mike  says:

Nice List Funktuall... that dude also didn't notice P.E.'s "Fight The Power" chillin' at #14 on the list. I nominate De La Soul's "Eye Know", a classic love jam from Three Feet High & Rising and Teena Marie's "Square Biz"... If Blondie & Herbie made the list, this joint deserves to make the cut as well.

Word, Nice to see "Eye Know" make the cut. Real recognize real... How bout some X-Clan? "Funkin' Lesson'", "Verbal Milk" and "In The Ways of The Scales" are some personal faves. Or how bout the philly classic "My Part of Town" by The Tuff Crew? I agree with "Ease Back" by Ultra Mag...

1. You've got good Jungle Brothers representation already but I'm still gonna have to vote for "On The Run"

2. "Releasing Hypnotical Gases" - Organized Konfusion (1991)

Like tha list funktual, there is so many greats though it's really hard to cut them down. How about; Steady B - Bring the beat back, Monie Love - It's a shame, Ice T - You played yourself!!! Just a few more funky tunes from that period, but if i listed all the tunes i thought that should be there i would have to make my own top 250!!

How come no one ever talks about Biz Markie's "Vapors" with classic oldschool, in my opinion that song could easily be top 50 even 25 but pretty much everyone i know has never even heard of it....

I haven't beenkeeping up with this list but I will surely add yours to the hierarchy.

Prob'ly won't use the 1991 stuff, (Cypress Hill & Brand Nubian will be on the next edition!) but all the rest is gold. Dress Code! Throwdown! Yesyesyeys

I saw K-solo and Just-Ice up in there which is nice. The Fugitive and Going Way Back would be my suggestions.

I left off Grandaddy IU, anything off of Smooth Assassin. Somethin' New is the one most people heard of.

As I went down your list...I said to myself, he will probably going to forget Latino rappers from the West Coast, but there they are Mellow Man Ace and Kid Frost. I am impressed.

I could not come up with a definite 25 that should also belong there, and I also did not want repeat any artist...so here are my extra 25. Some, may not be great, but they were fun and were heard booming in the streets of NY for months and months.

In no particular oder:

Public Enemy - Night of The Living Baseheads [1987]

UMCs - Blue Chesse [1991]

Black Sheep - The Choice is Yours (Revisited) [1991]

3rd Bass - Steppin to The AM [1989]

Boogie Down Productions - Crimininal Minded (Live Hardcore Worldwide version) [1991]

Jungle Brothers - I'll House You [1988]

Powerule - Smooth [1991]

Diamond D - Best-Kept Secret [1992]

Showbiz & AG - Sould Clap [1992]

Eric B. & Rakim - Juice (Know the Ledge) [1991]

Big Daddy Kane - Nuff' Respect Due [1991]

Big Daddy Kane ft. Nice & Smooth - Pimpin' Ain't Easy [1989]

Stetsasonic - 4 Eva my Beat [1986]

Antoinette - Who's The Boss [1989]

Ice-T - I am Your Pusher [1988]

LL Cool K - Mama Said Knock You Out [1990]

Kool Moe Dee - I Go to Work [1989]

Cypress Hill - The Phuncky Feel One [1991]

Super Lover Cee & Casanova Rud - Girls I got 'em Locked [1987]

Positive K - I Got a Man [1992]

Tim Dog - Fuck Compton [1991]

Stezo - It's My Turn [1989]

Gang Starr - Just to Get a Rep [1985]

King Tee - Bass [1988]

Luke - I Wanna Rock [1992]

Again thanks, I youtube every song you listed, it is 6am...I had fun doing so, but oh man, I really need to go to sleep.
