thanks for compiling such a long, detailed list! Good resource for hip fans! :)
The list sure is long...
Thanks FreeMusic. You're really deep.
THE LIST IS THE ALL THAT, IVE HEARD EVERYTHING ON IT
Okay, I think that was a compliment.
YEAH
nice but i dnt know about the trick daddy shit
I didn't either til I moved to Florida.
no spoken word shit, no sage francis, no immortal technique, nothing off of rhymesayers, (SIGH).
ugh
I like all that stuff but that ain't this. When I do underground, I'll cover all that!
I love Matisyahu and The Streets and Dizzee Rascal too.
Good choices here. But I wouldn't call Crazy by Gnarls Barkley a hip-hop song. And I might have passed it because I was just skimming but you don't have any T-Pain? And you only had one song by Wyclef? Your missing Sweetest Girl by Wyclef. And a couple other songs. (You Know What It Is by T.I and Stronger by Kanye West, and Last Night by Diddy)
Tayler!
and Lean Like A Cholo by Down ! That's also a great song.
Tayler!
Yeah, well. I don't want to be rude but uh....yeah. That crap is exactly why i put out a list. So people will know it's proper place. Not even close. Stronger by Kanye is a complete rip-off and is not good on a dancefloor trust me i know.
The New Gnarls isn't as good but it's close. Cee-Lo + Danger Mouse = Hip-Hop's Future!
It's actually funny how many young people can go through a list like this and they don't know half the songs, so they criticize. This list is a gift from heaven. Follow it to the letter and say no more. LOL! j/k
Seriously though, with all this talent I've assembled, you have nothing to say about what I DID write.
Instead ya reppin Cholo music. bah!
Where is the respect for the talent in the room?
Haha HEYY NOW I said good list! The first thing I said was good choices! I am younger and don't know some of these songs but I know most. But I forgot to say Laffy Taffy by D4L and Switch by Will Smith. Those are also great songs. Haha.
Lean Like A Cholo is an awesome song.
Tayler!
You're making me smile wide but I ain't sayin another thing about it. :D
That's cuz you know I'm right! Isn't it? :p
Tayler!
Give it ten years and you won't like them much.
Great list. Top notch choices. One song I didn't see on there and is good in it's own right is Jack Of Spades by Boogie Down Productions. First heard it off the I'm Gonna Git You Sucka soundtrack.
damn.
fuckin on point list.
Id probly put protect ya kneck before M.E.T.H.O.D man but thats just me respectin the gods, but the fact that you got the first conscious song ever in the top five with the message let me know whats good.
Thanks for putting this together! You hit all the greats. Even tho you said not to pay attention to the order, it's hard to do that! You could give more credit to the trailblazers. we wouldnt have hip hop if it wasnt for Kool Herc, The Last Poets, Grandmaster Caz (I know you put Cold Crush Brothers). I'm just an old school fan, all those guys should go ahead of Snoop.
man i'm old....
Thanks for writing therealroxanne. Yeah, you touched on it right there. I DO have The Last Poets on my Funk List. Caz & Herc are like the stilts that held the tent together at the very first Hip-Hop revival meeting.
Bob. you're Right, Protect your neck is fierce! I was prob'ly letting the DJ in me get the better of me on some of these. Like with Snoop & the Mary J. Method Track too. Those songs kill on the dancefloor.
sick songs. think rock the bells by LL is on there twice. can i get an atmosphere song or maybe what's on your mind by rakim? tight list, though. now i know what i'm gonna do for the next few hours on isohunt.
tater - kanye west sucks balls! he is just barely a better rapper than puffy doodie or whatever the f his name is now. is kanye comin out w/ a new vodka too?
whoa! BillyBlog hookin in up. Both of those joints should be on here and thanks for the geads up on LL. I changed it to Protect Ya Neck, another oversight on my part.
HELLO
thank you for not putting lil wayne on there...
even though hit em up off the carter2 is the shit!
Yer Welcome but I really dig his new song KUSH. Dope song of the summer.
you have just 10% of you picks coming from the West Coast (and that is including the one track by Sir-Mix-A-Lot)! How can this be? The West Coast is more to Hip-Hop than a handfull of Snoop Dogg tracks. There is only something like 1 Ice Cube Track! What is that about!
Mmm. Ya know I didn't realize it but your right. I wasn't raised on Too $hort like so many others. Please understand that we New Yorkers had so many other rappers around from here that we barely realized anyone else could do it before The Chronic, ya know besides Ice-T. Granted we had hits from you guys but not consistent groups.
In my adult Hip-Hop life I have come to know and revere both The Freestyle Fellowship and Above the Law. But they were not part of MY history. This list certainly has NY bias b/c I'm from NY but not because I don't like it.
Domino, Del Tha Funkeee Homosapien, The Pharcyde, I thought I touched on quite a few but if you have any other groups you'd like to add, I'll respond honestly about my knowledge of them.
Honestly http://hubpages.com/hub/The-Most-Fun-Hip-Hop-Song- I just made this like 2 days ago.
and I gave the title to the West Coast!
ALSO KNOW:
I am a Funk 1st, Hip-Hop 2nd Guy! My knowledge and interest in Hip-Hop stens from it's roots in funk. I'm not a Hip-Hop expert. Just an enthusiast. It's an on-going process too.
I'm just now realizing that Lil' Wayne isn't as bad as I thought. The new album has some delicious cuts on it.
Great list. I've gone through it trying to figure out what's missing, and really there isn't anything missing, except for "Hey Young World" by Slick Rick. I would have definitely found room for that one.
I love Slick Rick but that one is just okay for me.
thank you for responding as you did. I love east coast hip hop, but a child of the west understands that while hip hop started in the east, the west funkdified it and added an element that is still discussed today: Gangsta rap. As a funk fan, the tendancy would be to recognize The Chronic as a ground breaker, which i will not dispute; but there is Warren G and Nate Doggs REGULATE to contend with, as well as WC and the MAAD Circle. DJ Quik enfussed hip hop with its funk and jazz roots on his album Safe and Sound. Today there are still proponents of the Gangsta way of life like the Game. In the Bay, there is E40 and the Click, Too $hort, of course- but let us not forget about the all-mighty Souls of Mischief or the Dialated Peoples. On the Brown front there is, of course, Cypress Hill, whose stoner-hop music was quite pervasive throughout the '90s and Kid Frost reppin' La Raza.
If you are a funk fan, or simply an ecclectic fan of music, period, may i suggest OZOMATLI: a mix of jazz and soul and hip hop and latin music. They are like WAR, but for hip hop
I'm mad! You aint got no DMX on there (RR Anthem, I Can Feel It, How's It Going Down) but you got some songs thats not worthy of this list like:
Luv 2 Luv U (Rmx) (Magoo is hardly a good rapper)
Crazy - Gnarls (Good song but...this list?)
This is How We Do It - Montell (Pop/R&B)
I'm A Thug - TDD (Why???????)
Closet Freak - Ceelo (You Cant Be Serious)
The Way We Ball - Lil Flip (GTFOH!)
Horse and Carriage - Camron/Mase (Blatant misstep...come on...only in '99. An even better Camron would be Hey Ma.)
(some others)
I mean all good songs but these and no DMX!?
kerouazy21 a lot of those artists you mention are on there. Regulate is # 62 Tonite is at 148. Souls of Mischeif, Cypress Hill, Dilated are on there too.
kpfingaz the very fact that you dissed Cee-Lo leaves me worried for you. DMX, eh? Make your list and we'll compare.
My only problem is that most people see a list like this and they don't take the time to give props to the work that is done, they only want to point out their personal omissions. Oh well. I prob'ly do the same thing.
Magoo may suck but that is a rediculous beat for Hip-Hop.
Yeah the beat is sick but this list is about songs aint it? I wasn't really dissing Ceelo. Crazy was crazy...I have it on my media player. Didn't really pay too much attention to the other song.
I won't bother making a list. It would probably look like yours except it would have DMX on it and exclude some of the ______ songs you have on here.
Lol..somebody said Lean like a Cholo by Down? I don't even know who Down is.
Yeah, but she's just a kid, she don't know.
Closet Freak is AMAZING.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQAHMj2qFxE
She's cool...I like her spirit.
Yeah...checked it out again...nothing special :-/
I will say this. I made this list a long time ago and I haven't really checked it in a while.
Songs like Horse & Carriage (which I used to hate) grew on me through the years and years of hot ladies asking for it and then shakin' they asses to it.
Hey Ma is better. Re: In Da Club by 50 cent, again i think I was blinded by how useful the song is to a DJ as opposed to it's true value.
Wanksta is a much better track.
I also agree about Montell Jordan being R&B.
This thing has a lot of holes b/c it isn't long enough. It doesn't have enough artists. Ras Kass, Pharaohe Monch, Obie Trice, Masta Ace, Marley Marl, Smif N Wessum?
Yep agreed...the Bootcamp Clik is one of my favorite clicks and a lot of these rappers that you mentioned don't get enough due recognition.
keep it real fingaz!
I give you props for the fact because you picked some of the best songs that really define hip-hop. I won't lie...I like "Fire man" by Lil' Wayne, but most of his music is trash to me, but I respect any artist that is able to make a record especially one that sells well. People get too judgmental on music because they don't take the time to see that every genre of music has their black sheep. Just like rock has Rick Astley, country music has Toby keith and rap has people like MC Hammer. You know at one time these were big names, but sooner or later, you just want them swept under a rug.
U sure do have a long list of songs y so many i mean seriosly!!!!!!!
look's like this is the s...!!!All one need's 2 know's right hear doog
i like most of the list just a few outkast, knarls, and a few others i would change but good looking thats a lot of songs. its a good playlist. what you think about some of these songs though.
da joint-epmd, gettin it- too short- life is too short (remix)- too short, Boys in the hood-eazye, the gas face- 3rd bass, im you pusher-ice t, 2 words, mos, kanye, freeway, i shot ya, big, the ripper strikes back-ll cool j, dangerous- big L and o.c, better stay up in your house-busta/rah digga, sosa-az,
this is a pretty nice list but i think i used to love h.e.r. should be number 1 and canibus - Poet Laureate II, kool g raps men at work, and gzas labels should have been there but much respect to ur list
Well, that's a real long list there. At least Eve, Herbie Hancock, and Sir-Mix-a-Lot are on the list...Not bad!
Keep on Hubbin' bro!
Fight the Power at 134???????????!!!!???????
i just wanna know how long it took you to type this? :) thanks. these are classics and it is sad how many yutes don't know a lot of these - now they listen to a lot of junk.
our hard drive crashed and so I'm trying to rebuild. i don't care about the order...thanks for making my job easier :)
No problem. External Hard Drive My Friend.
dude got to hand it to you for getting all this down but don't you think you are omitting a few classics here? Naughty by Nature "Hip Hop Hooray" Nelly' Hot in Here" , bLACK eYED pEAS "Where is the Love' just to name a few
It was an external hard drive! Get this - it was within the 1 year warranty and Western Digital is giving us a free new one, but wants to charge $2500 for data recovery! And it was a stupid problem with THEIR equipment! Let me count the ways I've been ripped off....they're so lucky I need to get my kids pics outta there
ASHWINSPGA - It's a start...I'm sure there are a few more, but then it'd have to be a "300 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs of All-Time" list instead of 250
I think he just got tired of typing ;-)
And I'd only agree with Naughty by Nature - the others are OK.
This is, in my opinion, the best, most comprehensive top Hip Hop Songs list out there. Totally on point. AND FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE WHO THINKS JUICY IS THE GREATEST TRACK EVER (which it is).
Though, in my opinion, some songs could have been left off and some could have been put on.
Taken Off:Blow Ya Mind-Eve ft Gwen Stefani: Really? C'mon Man.
Shake Ya Ass-Mystikal: Noooooooo!!!!!
Put onto the list?
Brand New Funk-DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince (No, I do not call him Will Smith lol)
Brenda's Got A Baby-2pac.
Brooklyn's Finest-Jay-Z & Notorious B.I.G
Other than those, Sweeeeet list man.
Much Love

The list at first looks good and all...but whatever happened to some classics like Nas' ether,I made you look?!Sheek Louch has no place in the list too.Scarface?Jedi mind tricks? The firm?...all i'm sayin' is you're entitled to your own opinion but don't tell me "Greatest hiphop songs so far"...*eats popcorn*
good choices for your list.
"Mumu land", KLF featuring Tammy Wynette. This one rocks da house!
wtb more nas...
just one thing... there should've been more 2pac on the list... maybe about 5 songs more..
how do u want it,
2 of amerikaz most wanted,
life goes on.
to live and die in L.A,
all about u.....
except that, nice list !!!
Your an expert. I will have to look at a lot of these. I am only doing a little part time business for high schoolers where I rely on the top 40's to get me through. I am going to have to add a lot of these to my list.
But what happened to Cha Cha Slide and Soulja Boy's Superman. These have been the two big ones for me. I know I'm old and out of touch, so thanks for the list.
Really amazing list of songs thanks for sharing!
Great list! I think that you forgot the best female rapper (in my opinion) MC Lyte Cha cha cha.
nice list but I can't agree with that order.. looks little biased to east coast style.
Long list! I will admit, that even though I don't listen to hip-hop very often, I have at least heard most of these songs!
Great Hub DJ!
Thanks for the list. Collection for my hip hop dancing.
Hey man, alot of respect for that list- Very impressed you could come up with a list of 250, staying true to the roots of hip-hop, and adhering as well as you did with different styles and tastes.
As part of the younger generation,I, of course, feel that some of the West Coast has been missed out on, some more appropriate Nas and 2pac songs- Erik B and Rakim; hell even stick in some Spice 1- the godfather in my opinion :D
Other than that, again, props to list, its no easy feat creating such a controversial list :D
Just bought my iTouch and dayum near every song on your list going to my hiphop playlist...I will replace a few with more 2pac though
This list is BOOTY...especially the first 1o songs!!
I was super worried when I scrolled through the list and MISSED Ante Up...You definitely covered all the major bases though with KRS, Biggie, Tupac, Outkast, Nas, etc.
Before I write anything more, I should mention that the following views are merely made up of my own personal opinions and in no way am I condemning any of your selections; just pointing out that I would have chosen differently. Here goes...
I can definitely see where the DJ background came through in this list, including songs like In Da Club. If we're talking about "club bangers" like that one, I'm putting DMX - Party Up way ahead of 50.
Here are a few other joints I would have included:
Eminem - Infinite (still his best, as far as I'm concerned)
EPMD - Da Joint
Smiff N' Wessun - Bucktown remix feat. MOP
Mos Def - Mathematics
Black Moon - Who Got Da Props
Xzibit - What You See Is What You Get
Talib Kweli - Just to Get By feat. Jay-Z & Kanye West
Kardinal Offishal - Bakardi Slang
NYG'z - Strength
Papoose - Alphabetical Slaughter
Royce da 5'9" - Boom
The roots - Clones
And you failed to include ANY Big L!!! Like I mentioned earlier, this is just my personal preference, but I'm a little bit surprised there's not a single L joint on that list considering you're from NYC haha. '98 Freestyle is legendary!
Also I'm not sure if you'd consider the following to be "underground" and thus part of a separate list, but Madlib, Madvillain, J Dilla, Jaylib, Little Brother, Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks, Army of the Pharaohs, Brother Ali, etc. are notable absences (for me anyway).
Keep doing what you're doing though, I enjoy these lists!
Peace
HAHA! takemypicture you are funny. You noticed In Da Club (which in retrospect should NOT be on this list) but then you missed Big L which is right next to it. 78-79
EPMD is a glaring omission on my part. I'm biased as a huge Rakim fan but whatever they were good. I am going to admit that this list is stale! Needs to be updated MAJORLY. Get By - Kweli is already up there though. Where's Time 4 Sum Aksion?
I need to get busy fixing this list.
hee hee, nice list, but the bitching is precisely why I stay away from doing them.
Hahaha! You're totally right...my bad!
Kinda Dumbed list where is the Pac's Changes? And more and more from him ?
I only agree with your first sentence: This isn't the order you would pick, right? RIGHT! NOT EVEN CLOSE.
OK, thot I was outdated in hip hop till I found this list, the new cats killed hip hop, peace 2 da ol skool, that was da shyyyt
Why does Jay-Z comes in there so much ? while many 2pac songs are missing (Dear mama, So many tears, Brenda's got a baby)
Mystikal shoulndt be on the list!
Canibus cud be up here, same for Xzibit and DMX
Coolio's Gangsta's paradise is DEF. missing
The list is pretty decent, I probably didnt here 1/4 of the songs but i know the artists. Good job
i love itt, im into alot of the 'new era' of hip hop, a couple of generatiions onward from most of these artists, like kid udi, drake, asher roth and kanye of course :D. I knew most of these artists but as for a handfull; i was completely ovliviouse to there existance and impact on hip hop. Its opened my eyes to some extent and made me realise that i should keep an open mind to this old school rap game.
Thanks alot :D
Steve
Whenever anybody tries to comply a list like this there is always disagreement because of the difference in hip hop over the last 30 or so years. There were no 808's nor the other technology that artists use today. If there were voice enhancers and synthesizers in the 70's that we have now we would already have had a t-pain. Not taking anything away from his style or hustle but you hear what i'm saying. You can't compare an E-40 of today with a Rakim, hip hop today has the same backbone but is not what it was so its not fair to combine the different genres.
Really? No One Mic by Nas? I think that's one of the best songs of all time, I can barely breathe when it gets to the really intense parts but whatever...
Love the list, don't agree with 'Juicy' as N°1 but thats subjective, anyhows I think the list misses 'Back to back ryhming' by lord finesse and AG, pure freshness
I would get Eminem's Lose yourself 1 :P

WOW .......I GLAD2 SEE CARES 4 HIP HOP
I dont understand why The World is Yours is so far down on the list. I think its Nas' best song. And personally, I think Respiration- Black Star and Common should be on the list.
How is it that you have Big Pimpin' And baby got back on tha list, and you didn't put ANYTHING off Lifestyles ov da Poor and Dangerous? Why is digable planets all the way at 190? This list is not true hip-hop.
More Guru + Premier. More Big L. More Tribe. More KRS-One. Less Beastie Boys. Less Eminem. 'Less you wanna now nuthin'.
Everyone is complaining....if you disagree where is your list to combat it? Keep up the great work just got into and I dont wanna leave.
thats dope. tribe called quest is the greatest. the wu is tought too
Great job with the list, hard work compiling a 200+ list and putting your own opinion out there. A few things i dislike, but we all have our own point of view, one thing i gotta say though.
You chucked in drug ballad and square dance by eminem, hell you even threw in lose yourself at number 77, but you fail to include stan?
really DJ Funktual?
Really?
Do you have a problem with Nas??
The World Is Yours is better than Juicy and La Di Da Di combined
A Tribe Called Quest- We can Get Down?
Amazing list though.
have you ever heard verbal intercourse by nas, raekwon, and ghostface off cuban linx? in my opinion it would be #1
other than that great list other than a couple songs i would move around like cant knock the hustle should be in the top 10
The best of the best in hip hop music is listed here. Congratulations for the author!!
Okay so I like the list, but why isn't "Once Again" by Tribe in the top 10. Also where is Nas "Halftime" that would be my numero uno!
Aesop Rock - Day Light.
good collection.
There is so much talent listed here, that I needed to post my heartfelt thank you. You did not post my favorite songs, so it was not aride down memory lane. This is a history of Hip Hop here, and this is a lesson for I am sure most people.
Again, thank you.
crap list.....lose yourself nd stan deserve a spot at the top 10
Dude...do you really have "Big Pimpin" Over Can't knock the Hustle? I dont even think Big Pimpin should be on the list, you got a lot of good songs on the list, but i dont think alot of that should be there
i mean come on bro, u dont eve have a nas song in your top 50
are you blind, i see a nas song in the top 50, good list man
Sorry man, my first problem was Juicy being the top hip-hop song of all times, when I don't even consider that Biggie's best song, but after seeing no Run-DMC in the top 25...you lost me.
However, this was great idea to generate comments! :D
One song I think you should put on there is 3030 by Deltron 3030. IMO its top 250 easily.
But other than that its a good list man
Notable Run-DMC classics omitted from this list include: Hard Times, Jam Master Jay, Rock Box, Raising Hell, You Be Illin, My Adidas, Peter Piper. You did Run-DMC an injustice man, they dominated an era and your list doesn't show that. You've got songs like Crazy by Gnarls Barkley, and Creep from TLC on this list...and they're not even hip hop. Where is Beastie Boys' "Paul Revere"? #244? Are you serious? Wow.
This list is so bad it's addictive.
Why isn't UTFO Roxanne Roxanne on the list? It's a song that launched a whole set of Roxanne wars in the 1980s and generated more than 100 follow up songs. Can't say that about ANY other song in hip hop, let alone any other genre.
this is a great list but i think a few more big pun and biggie songs deserve to be there....ATCQ favorite hip-hop group of all time!! im only 15 and i preety sure i know about 200 of thhe songs on this list. Cant argue, this is a masterpiece :P
swesome list of songs,, would of placed them diffrently tho,,, changes is tupacs best song i think,, its like that is run dmc's best song i think as well,, and i think rappers delight should be number one on any hip hop list, rather then having .. be faithful by fatman scoop ahead of it lol
I feel this list. Understand that this is just a list of someone personal hip hop look. It would be to hard to try and compile a list that would include everyone's favorite hip hop/rap songs. There are some classics on here that most people would miss; like "The Bridge is Over" by Boogie Down Productions. Planet Rock is a hip hop classic the hit the game hard. DJ Quik had everybody trying to get bent " Tonite ". UGK, well, anything by them would be a classic. Just so many out there that could be included. " The Formula" by the D.O.C., Too Short ahmmmm just too many to name. But this list got me looking up albums right now....good job.
Thanks alot for your comments. Good joints all.
Real good but your missing some important ones like Triumph-Wu-tang,10 Crack Commandments-Notorious B.I.G,California Love Tupac,Im a hustla Cassidy,Ice Cream Wu-Tang,Ruff Riders Anthem,Up in Here Dmx
I really need to update this.
some guy said switch by will smith. that guy needs a serious check

I haven't done hip hop for many years, but your knowledge always amazes me. Another great list!
