· Asthma: Asthma is a condition where the breathing tubes of a person get affected. A child breathes through noses or mouths and the air goes to the windpipe and from there to airways and lungs, via breathing tubes. When a kid gets asthma attack, the airways get swollen and narrow making it difficult for air to get in and out of the lungs. The child has a suffocating experience that needs immediate attention. Asthma is most common in school-age kids. A ‘trigger’ in asthma refers to the something that initiates asthma symptoms. Every kid with asthma has different triggers. Some common triggers are allergens or things that cause allergic reaction, irritants in air including perfumes; aerosol spray, Cold or flu and extreme weather condition. In order to avoid asthma attack a child should be kept off the triggers that cause his attack.

  • Obesity: When a child is so overweight that it starts to affect the health, he or she is said to be obese. Major causes of obesity are unhealthy diets- that are rich in sugar and fats, lack of exercise or disease like hypothyroidism. Severe health affects of obesity are hypertension and vision problems, problems of heart and joints, high blood pressure, diabetes. Obesity not only increases the risk of a child getting ill, it also has intense affect on child’s social and emotional issues. Change in lifestyle and food habit is recommended to combat obesity among children.

  • Diarrhea: Diarrhea occurs when the frequency of bowel movement increases with more watery and loose stools than normal. Diarrhea is common among children of different age groups. Diarrhea may occur due to dietary changes, infections in the digestive tracks from bacteria or food poisoning parasitic infection, serious disease like ‘cystic fibrosis’. Children younger than 6 months and those with other health problems need immediate attention and fluid replacement to avoid dehydration. In case of infections appropriate medicines should be given after consultation with your doctor. But ORS should be given the moment you think your child is suffering from diarrhea.
