3 Reasons To Get GPS Fleet Tracking
78We all know that saving money on business operations is a key factor in turning a profit as a business owner. The competative advantage that you receive from being able to reinvest more of your revenues back into infrastructure or additional employees is what you need to take your business to the next level. Alternatively, you could reduce your prices because your operating costs are low and under cut your competition. This can generate you more revenue and improve your customer's overall satisfaction, a serious positive for the success of your business.
These are all things that any business owner already knows and there are many different techniques that one can employ to acheive these goals. Some of the common practices that occur are:
- Reduce the costs of materials. This is very common and is probably the most unfortunate of all the choices because it impacts the customer the most. Ninety-nine percent of the time a reduction in the cost of the raw materials needed to make your business work means that you are skipping out on quality. Sometimes this is necessary to keep a business competative, but most of the time there are other options.
- Reduce employee pay. Another common practice is to reduce employee pay or lay off some of your work force. This can often have a negative effect on company morale as well as have the unintended consequence of reducing individual as well as overall worker productivity. Sometimes this is necessary, but hopefully your business never has to succomb to this last resort.
- Reduce company overhead. This might involve finding a cheaper place to run your business out of or finding ways to cut back on regular business supplies such as paper, printer carterages, or gasoline. Reducing company overhead is difficult, but impacts the business' abilty to generate revenue to least because it rarely impacts company morale or the customer experience of your products and services.
Since reducing company overhead is the most begning form of cost reduction we want to focus on this task first. For most small business this cannot be done in very many ways, since they don't have the leverage that a larger company might nor the economy of scale to pull off significant price reductions. Instead, companies that are smaller need to turn to alternative means, and for companies with fleets one way to acheive results is to implement GPS fleet tracking on every service vehicle in their fleets.
There are many reasons why implementing this type of fleet management system is important for cutting costs, but let us take a look at just three reasons:
- Create more honest employees. I am sorry to say it, but most people actually work more efficiently when they know that someone is watching their activity. There are tons of different reasons for this and not all of them are concious. The bottom line is that workers will be far more productive if they know that their vehicle is being watched by a GPS fleet tracking device - period.
- Creat more productive employees. This is very much related to how the technology will create more honest workers but it is a little different. I am a firm beleiver that workers will also work smarter knowing that you are watching them. It might be because they are motivated to look good in the eyes of their employeer as they are seen making better decisions and more stops out in the field than their contemporaries. Or they might just become more aware of things and their brains just might be more active. It really doesn't matter as long as they produce more.
- Save money on gas. This is a great benefit considering just how much gas has shot up in recent history. By being able to enforce fuel efficient driving practices you are going to be able to reduce fuel consumption by a significant margin depending on how lazy your workforce has been in already deploying these tactics.
Even if you were to just see these three benefits in with your small business GPS fleet tracking system you would have excellent success. You would be making serious inroads into the financial flurishing future taht you want for your company and for yourself. Not every company can see these types of results, but most can. Be sure to weigh the potential benefits against the sure costs of the program.
Fuel Price Update
Since first writing this hub there has been a massive drop in fuel prices across the United States. Gas in my local California went from around $4.50 a gallon all the way down to $1.50 a gallon in December 2008. Since then prices have risen again to around $1.80, but this still is about a 60% drop in fuel prices.
As a result of these changes, the savings generated by using GPS fleet tracking systems has fallen. Also, the depressed economy that we are currently in right now does not necessarily lend itself to making this type of purchase unless you have sufficient capital on hand to meet your business expenses and keep the work going. If you have meet these requirements, then you should still consider a tracking system for your fleet.
Gas prices will not be this low forever and are already showing signs of rising. You might want to wait until GPS manufacturers start lowing prices to cope with the declining sales so that you can push your money further faster.
