Happiness is a choice you make, not something you wait to occur

It is not a state of euphoria you can tangibly feel; it knows that you're making the best of your time. And it's so easy to do! Even the simple act of smiling doubles up as a great happiness-maker and stress-reliever! But what exactly are the choices we need to make to be happy?

It really isn't about the money

Recognition and a fat salary are often, undeservedly, given to those who take shrewd (read sly) steps to climb the corporate ladder. But do you recognize what you’re actually giving up for a chance to afford that BMW and bungalow'? When Leila*, a senior supervisor at atop manufacturing company, decided to bribe her boss for a salary increment, she had no idea he‘d let it on to his general manager who, in turn, fired Leila* for breaking company ethics. Two years down the road, she’s still unemployed because word had gotten around. However forget the unemployment for a second as Leila*‘s predicament includes hating herself for being tempted to do such a thing. That mistake effectively wiped out all her good work in the eyes of both future employers and her own. Learn from Leila* and know that once we let greed in, self-doubt often follows. Slow down, take a deep breath and take smart cuts, not short cuts.

Take care of yourself

The very act of putting into motion a health regime can make you healthy. Okay, so that's not scientifically proven, but personal experiences have shown that it's true. We all know it and health junkies and our mothers nag us about it; that we must eat healthily and exercise regularly. The irony is that not many of us choose to heed it. Best-selling authors Heather Summers and Anne Watson define what it really means to take care of oneself in The Book of Happiness: Brilliant Ideas to Transform Your Life. Boasting the sort of “bad habits that involve chocolates, alcohol, Eve-course meals and the exercise routine of a couch potato" will not get us anywhere in the long run. Chon*, a dyslexic college student, personifies persistence. When exams approached, Chon' would stay up late into the night, working harder and longer than his fellow students just to be among the top five. Studying was hard but he pressed on, not taking advantage of the extra support or tuition provided to students with such disabilities. After a while, late nights and caffeine took a toll on his health. Chon* was getting nowhere, because the more he crammed, the less he took in and the more exhausted he became. He - wasn't getting enough rest or exercise to maintain physical energy and refresh his mind. Some of us do this, too; work ourselves 'to death‘ and then complain about the stress. Many times it‘s because we poke our noses into too many things, often unnecessarily! Once in a while, it doesn’t hurt to mind your own business by saying ‘No‘.

Make sure you're in control

Pettiness can be destructive, not only to our relationships but alternately our happiness. Sarah" was having a good laugh with her friend Jane` over lunch when the latter good—naturedly knobbed Sarah about her thrift. Sarah* wasn’t amused and got up and left the table, leaving a dumb-founded Jane'. After the rodent, Sarah* refused her friend's apology because she perceived the latter meant to hurt hen It was a joke and certainly doesn’t warrant Sarah' gloving her friend the cold shoulder Again, the principle old ‘giving the other party the benefit of the  doubt' comes into play. Sarah‘ should keep an open mind and learn to see things differently rather than feel prejudiced towards Jane Even N the other party did it on purpose, you can remain jovial and avoid fling yourself up, or go on the offensive and fear what others think. Remember you should be your worst and best centric, so stand training your mind now to appreciate your good attributes and respect the need to improve on some fronts.
