i wrote what a real modern day depression would look like here...

http://godandall.blogspot.com/2008/03/gas-to-10-ga

i think it would make the 1920's depression look like a walk in the park.

The reason being is the suburbs are so big that you cant put a GOV soup line every 6 blocks, we are TOO big now as a nation.

If trucks stop geting food to groceries, or the grocery stores go out of business, or, food is too high to buy, or... or...

There is a TIPPING POINT in our economy where EVERYTHING UNRAVELLS.

If we stay BELOW that point, we are OK,ther ewill just be high unemployment, prices, etc...

BUT< IF we go PAST that point, EVERYTHING breaks down.

No police, fire, gas, water, eectricity etc... (the GOV cant pay workers if the GOV is broke)

cheers

We have other bills beside $1's. Divide that pile by 100.

Duff  says:

>>Divide that pile by 100<<

Try thousands, or millions.

Or, even think of it as ELECTRONIC or GOLD.

Not all of the country's money is paper....

Interesting concept.

Thats just HALF of what the bailout actually was too.

And to BRAD. I think soup and bread lines is a ways away if at all. I also think you're drastically overestimating the effect a "recession" can have on our economy.

I wrote a little blog about my thoughts on the matter and its bad, just not as bad as you're saying it will be:

so i followed the pictures up to 191 billion but the jump from 191 to 315 seems a little outlandish... your telling me another 124 billion will raise the pile 4 fold. Is that money printed on stone tablets?

jason  says:

Logic Hole, the difference is in how the money is arranged. In the 191 billion picture, the stack is (roughly) 4x5x9 (where 1 block is 900 million) but the 315 billion dollars are a tower with a 4x4 base. This creates the perceived drastic difference.

David LaFerney  says:

Consider that the wealthiest people in the world have upwards of 30 Billion dollars. Or at least they did until this month.

I wonder at what point they would say "You know what? I have enough money now."

Dan  says:

Ok, Maybe the money is ELECTRONIC or GOLD, but what if it wasn't? Suppose to the contaary it was one dollar bills...

okay_i_see  says:

Why would you ever want that amount of money in the lowest denomination? Surely 100 dollar bills would make the far easier.

clemm  says:

So if we give 315 Billion dollers to the rich bastard bankers to party on, with no restraints. then we will be able to buy a gallon of gas for 900 million. What a deal. Im going to stock up on bullets, and home grown food. I suggest the rest of you learn to speak Chinaes.

smurf  says:

I did the calculation just for the heck of it.... If we assume 10 pennies is an inch and you stacked 300 billion dollars up in pennies in one single colum it would reach half way to the sun... That is approximately 47 million miles!!!!

smurf  says:

Oops!! me again... sorry it is only 470 thousand miles of pennies. Ihought it would be more than that. Still quite a distance... That is 18 times around the world at the equator!!!

alnoga  says:

I have a $315B dollar bill that fits in my wallet. Why would you want to stack up your 315B $1 bills like that? It's dangerous. I hope most people would have better sense than this.

hal  says:

seriously, recessions are natural and required in the american economy, if there is no real downturn then the a collapse is inevitable. but a recession is considerably different than a depression. do you really expect a 25% unemployment rate?

Rich  says:

Only 3% of america's money is cotton (Not made from paper guys ;-) )

The rest is made literally from nowhere..

All of our money is made in debt from bonds traded to the world bank (here in america) but on top of that 100x what we borrow in bonds is made from thin air.

maybe before the financial crisis the amout of $ 315 billion wasn't imagineable by any human brain.Time changes and now it looks like that the smallest unit is $ 1 billion, given by the government around the world to help companies in trouble. Companies hold by sharholder, taken in her pockets billions of bucks profit the last years.
