Europeans have long suffered under usurious fuel taxes which have brought the price of gasoline to over $10 a gallon. They developed a car culture based around small, fuel-sipping cars which, for obtuse reasons, are not sold in North America.

The primary reason is safety & emission standards. In many cases, Euro standards are even stricter than those in North America, but they differ in details, thus it is well nigh impossible to import Euro vehicles across the Atlantic.

Pointless bureaucratic stupidity is preventing the North American motorist from availing themselves of some phenomenal automobiles, which feature elevated build quality, surprising performance, remarkable handling and astounding fuel economy. Many of these cars get better mileage than hybrids while costing less than half. Best of all they are not subject to the hybrid’s problematic peculiarities.

It is unforgiveable that in an era of unaffordable fuel, the smallest engine sold in North America (other than the pricey Smart car) is 1.6 litres. There is an entire class of vehicles which includes sporty coupes, comfortable sedans, and even a couple of minivans with engines that are smaller and much more fuel frugal: They are extremely popular throughout Europe, and they’re only a quick snip of red tape away from being imported into the North American market.

These are 35 cars that can save America. They are manufactured by brands that are very familiar to Americans: GM, Ford, Toyota, Nissan and more. It is only the incompatibility of a sheaf of ridiculous minutae which is keeping North American motorists from enjoying these magnificent motor vehicles. They cost a fraction of a small American car, return more than twice the mileage, and could be the answer to the motoring dreams of millions of American families.

If only the moronic legislators would synchronize the conflicting legislation!
