What is it?

It is 3rd generation of wireless communication. 2G and 2.5G are, or were or will soon be a thing of the past. 3G networks offer more in communications applications, download speeds and of course the ability to receive an internet connection wherever a signal is present.  Or in other words is a mobile broadband network with more bandwidth.

A lot of the phones on the market today come with a built in 3G network so you can download applications and browse the web from your phone as well as download music, talk and text.. and I think though not entirely sure, I think you can also use your 3G phones to connect to your home PC as well, but don't quote me on that though I have been able to connect to the internet using my not 3G cell phone.

Most wireless providers offer the 3G modem now. T Mobile, Verizon, AT&T, and Criket and Sprint. I am sure there are other but don't recommend them coverage wise. I love the idea! It totally beats having to hassle with the cable company every time you move, or paying to access WiFi in a coffee shop or wherever it is you like to go. No wires, no mess, don't want your kids on the computer while your gone? Done! Just disconnect it from the USB port and take it with you.

Most of them also offer prepaid plans as well or customized plans as they call it, so you aren't locked into a contract if you decide you don't like it. Some companies like T Mobile offer hotspot plans where you can pay $20 a month to use the internet as much as you want in their hotspot areas. And as a T Mobile customer I know that they offer a lot of different plans that make sense. Hint, you have to probe them for the information. They also offer the best prepaid services, in my opinion of course.

AT&T says they have the largest coverage and roaming but I don't really trust them anymore after the shady crap they pulled with me when I switched to U-verse.

Criket might be good though I wouldn't use them if you plan on international travels.

For me trying to surf the net on a phone doesn't have the same appeal to me. I guess I just love my laptop too much but did you know they have mini laptops now that have just as much Ram and Gigs as the standard laptops? Check um out!

Umm, your ebay and amazon are wrong. If you are talking USB modems, people will come for modems, not for phones or computers. If you want to cover those too, write separate hubs for them. :)

Other then that I like it :)

well, OK...it didn't work well at all in Brasil last year. I do like the commercial by At & T though.
