Perhaps the fastest growing industry now is the gaming industry. It is also bigger than the cinema. Just imagine the process of creating a gaming system or the game itself requires a lot of time, effort and risk to the publishers, developers and the home companies. Nowadays, video games use motion capture technology, just like those animated movies we see. For instance, seeing the game play of Uncharted 2 in the Playstation 3, it’s like playing a CGI film, and you are the director of it.

When it comes to gaming technology, Nintendo never fails to impress. I guess the term gaming innovation is more appropriate than gaming technology when we refer Nintendo. Wii and Ds sales are something to think about. Nintendo introduced us not just their newest generation of console and handheld gaming system, but also, a new way to play games. We are all familiar with these, and believe it or not, we have fun.  Just like all Nintendo fanboys are saying that “It’s all about the game play,” since these Nintendo products obviously cannot compete with its rivals’ graphical power. But the main strength of Nintendo is such innovations to a new way to play games. I really admire the motto of one of the top executives at Nintendo saying, “Do not try to compete, be unique.” Thus, the saying prints money for the company.

Meanwhile, Sony’s Playstation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 catch up with all the motion-sensing hype that’s been going on. We know that these two can produce mind-blowing graphics with the help of their processors and HD capabilities. But recently, Microsoft, the software giant, introduced Project Natal, a shock to game enthusiasts worldwide. There’s no wiggle-waggle controller, you are the controller.    Although it’s only at alpha stages of development, such innovation is groundbreaking.

Sony also introduced a “wand,” a device that also senses motion of the player and is able to change form in the screen while the player is holding and moving the device. A PS3 eyetoy was also present. All these were announced and presented at E3 2009.

I also want to share another insight:

“It is really ironical that Xbox 360 fanboys criticize the Wii for being too much wiggle-waggle and all that stuff. But at the end of the day, they say ‘Natal is going to be the bomb!’ ”

Wii – “It prints money b*tch.” – Nintendo

PS3 Wand - “All my fairy dreams will come true!” – 12 year old girl

Xbox 360 Project Natal – “We find ways to satisfy pedophiles through Milo.” – Microsoft
