#1: AGREE ON YOUR DESTINATION: You may be able to do a short local trip without any planning but for a longer vacation, planning ahead should be your number one task you do before venturing out. Sit down and discuss with your family some places and somethings they want to do. If you don't have an idea where you want to go, look on the Internet and search family vacations, look up different state web-sites because each state has its own tourism section, ask friends where they have gone or go to your local library. There are so many places to see but make sure its something everyone wants to do. If the kids aren't going to be involved in the decision process make sure there is going to be things for them to do as well. You want to them to be excited about your family vacation.

#2: PLAN YOUR ITINERARY: Once you've picked out your destination you are going to want to see everything there is do there but remember to account for some relaxation time. You don't want to come back feeling you need to a vacation from your vacation. Googling your destination always helps to find different areas. Check out travel forums like Fodors.com, there you'll find real people talking about areas they've been to and what they liked and didn't like. You can even ask questions there and more than likely will get an answer back fairly quickly unless you are going somewhere really obscure. As I mentioned above, if your traveling in the States, all states will have a tourism section on their website. I'm sure most countries will also have their own website and tourism section. Once you know everything you want to do, plan it out each day and leave some wiggle room. Things usually take longer than you expect them to and as I said before leave some time just to relax. Remember, this is a vacation your on. You may also want to think about meals at this time. Are you going to eat out each day or are you going to bring food with you or do a little bit of both. Make sure you have enough room in your vehicle for everything you want to bring.

#3: BOOK YOUR STAY & TRAVEL: Now that you know where you are going and what you are going to be doing, it's now time to figure where you are going to stay and how you are going to get there. You don't want to do this as your first step because you want to make sure you are not too far from where you want to visit and I'm sure by this time in your research you have a better idea where you would like to stay. Most tourism websites have a lodging section. You can of course google lodging accommodations in your destination area. There are a few websites for just for campsites, bed & breakfasts, vacation rentals, cabins, and of course hotels and motels. When booking a hotel or motel make sure to always check their own website because most times they have the best rates. Now of course there is your mode of transport: plane, rental car, RV, or your own vehicle. Depending on where you are going, a plane alot of times will get you there quicker but then it will probably cost you more. The nice thing about taking your own car is that you can leave when you want and take alot more stuff with you than you could of on a plane. Many websites will check a number of airlines all at once for you making it a bit easier finding the cheapest flight. There are lots of variables but just make sure you confirm all your reservations ahead of time.

Now just go and enjoy your vacation and relax and have fun!
