For a lot of people out there, including me, fat accumulates around the midsection first. It is also the last place usually to see a reduction when we are attempting to lose weight. The first step to getting rid of love handles is to get rid of the fat. I’m going to tell you 3 basic things that you must do in order to get rid of your love handles.
Tip #1
The first thing that you should do is to incorporate abdominal exercises into your fitness routine. Abdominal exercises should only make up a small part of your workouts (2-3 times per week). The exercises will not help you to burn significant calories, but they will strengthen your abs and lower back. This will allow you to contract your muscles more giving you a leaner look.
Tip #2
Exercising is vital in the fight to slim your waistline. Remember you cannot spot reduce the fat in your waistline or any other part of your body. The best way to get rid of your love handles is to get rid of the fat in general. To do this you will need to follow some sort of cardiovascular and resistance training routine on a regular basis. Cardiovascular exercise is terrific for burning calories and will help you to lose weight. Some great examples of cardiovascular exercise are belly dancing, martial arts, walking, mountain biking, spinning, kayaking, and ballroom dancing. Cardiovascular exercises should be done at least 4-5 times a week.
Resistance training is another great way to help burn off fat. Resistance training can be done with weights or bands. Resistance training should be done 3 times a week.
Tip #3
The 80/20 rule states that 80% of your results will come from 20% of your efforts. This is true when learning how to get rid of love handles. In this case 80% of your results will come from your diet. Diet is by far the most important thing you can do to get rid of your love handles. It is important that you follow a diet that is realistic and does not require you to eliminate vital nutrients from your diet.

Very true about the spot reduction. I disagree with #1. You don't workout the other parts of your body 2-3 times a week, you shouldn't need to work out your abs that much either. You need more rest time. Muscle growth doesn't happen at the gym.

You may disagree with #1, but the abs are muscle and you need to work them out just like the other parts of your body if you want them to be strong too. 2-3 times a week for about 10 minutes is not much time at all. That's about every other day during the week and two days off on the weekend.
I'm not sure how much more rest your muscles need. Exercising the abs twice a week gives you 5 days of rest. Exercising 3 days a week gives you 4 days of rest. The only thing left is to exercise them 1 day a week with 6 days of rest in between. That simply will not be enough. It's better than nothing, but you wont see the results you're looking for.
