There’s a large array of offers when we’re buying home cinema equipment. From simple, straightforward equipments to very complex solutions, the array of setups come in all shapes, sizes and prices. Here’s a small check out list to take account for when choosing the solution that work for us.

Sometimes you need to drop a few bells and whistles. I know some people that bought a complex solution both sound and image and most of the solution is still packed in cases. The room where he was planning to setup the solution was too small for all the hardware. Also, the size of the screen should be planned. Don’t want a screen so large that you have to turn your head to see the all picture. The same way, don’t want one so small that you’ll need a telescope to watch a movie.

My opinion here can be a bit biased. I’m a huge video Projector Fan. And I also have the space to use it. The thing I like the most in video projectors is that you can set it up and store it in a very fast way. You can have it displayed in the living room or stored away in a cabinet. Once you need it, just spread the screen, setup the projector and you’re in business. It’s light (comparing with LCD and Plasma devices) and you can take it with you if you need. Also it’s non obstructive in the living room. You can setup the projector itself in the ceiling and the screen can be folded and stored on top of the furniture. Just unfold it when you need it.

When choosing a video projector, you have to lookout for a few things like lamps, maintenance and storage needs. Sometimes the projector is cheap but need a new lamp every couple of thousand hours. In the long run it can grow expensive. Also check if it’s shipped with storage and carry case. Those cases (specially the good ones) can be expensive and may not be exactly accurate for your hardware.

There’s no yes or no answer here. Both technologies have ups and downs. LCD technology has much better color saturation. Meaning that colors will be more vibrant. However, the projector itself is larger. On the other hand, DLP technology has a better black depth providing deeper and higher contrast. Old DLP equipments have a problem called the rainbow effect. Since it uses a technique with thousands small mirrors, those chromatic problems were common in the early equipments. Now that problem seems to be solved. LCD have a problem called pixelation. On larger devices, images become somewhat distorted on edges. Also LCD devices suffer from long term image degradation. In the long run, the blue channel start to shift and to degrade image quality.

No matter what choice you make, make sure that it’s the right one for you. Complete video projector solutions can be expensive. So don’t go and buy the first solution that appear to make sense to you. See, think and decide what´s the setup that best suits you.
