Today I have been mostly racing cars, tanks, boats, jetski's, monster trucks and anything and everything else that can possibly be raced, with the aim of picking out 5 of the best free racing games online. All the games that I have chosen to include are browser based flash games, which means that you don't have to download anything to be able to play them, and you don't need to sign up for a membership account for any of the sites, so you can just follow the link and start playing straight away. Drift runners is a car racing game in which you as well as trying to win the race you have to pick up as many gold coins as you can, and complete various challenges that are given for each of the 6 tracks so that you can buy upgrades for your car such as better acceleration, a higher top speed or better steering. Challenges include completing a course within a given time, destroying a set number of objects (such as road cones, snowmen, baricades etc.), staying on the road for the whole course or getting a certain amount of skidding done over the whole race. As the name suggests this is a game where there is lots of skidding around and power sliding through the corners, rather than using tight control and good driving skill. This means that the best tactic is often to just keep your finger on the accelerator throughout the entire course, which makes it my kind of racing game, but I guess it's your call whether that's the kind of thing that you like.

I'm sure I remember playing this game in the late 80's or early 90's, perhaps on an old Atari computer or something like that, although there is no information included about what the origins of the game are. It certainly has a retro feel to it anyway, and made me feel quite nostalgic. In many ways this is the opposite of Drift Runners, an opposition which is accurately symbolised by the fact that there is no brake command in Drift Runners, whereas there is in 3D Car Racing. If you go off the track you slow down to an absolute crawl almost instantly, and stay that way until you are back on track, so it is all about learning the courses and knowing when and how much to brake for the corners. You get a choice of cars, one with a high top speed and the other with good acceleration and slightly better handling, and you unlock new track by winning the race. Worth a few minutes of anyone's time, but particularly if you remember playing games like this on the early generations of home computers.

 When I first started playing this game it was a bit like trying to rub your stomach and tap your head at the same time - I just couldn't coordinate myself to do it and I got confused and started wandering off the course and all over the place. But by the end of my first race I was already starting to get the hang of it, and when I did this turned out to be a really fun little game. You take control of a tank and race around a track using the arrow keys like most of the other free racing games, but then with your other hand you use the mouse to control the turret on top of your tank and to use it to try and destroy the competition. It is this coordination of aiming the tank one way and the turret another way which completely foxed me at the start, but if the same thing happens to you then I would say it is well worth sticking with the game until you get the hang of it, because the addition of the 360 degree shooting makes this more fun and more interesting than just an ordinary car racing game. There are eight courses for you to try your hand(s) at, and some of them include extra hazards such as mines which you have to avoid hitting.

 The Heist is a Grand Theft Auto style game based entirely around the getaway driver, where you are a criminal who has various missions to complete for your underworld boss to earn yourself credits which you can then use to pimp your ride. You can also searn yourself extra credits for stuff like destroying police cars, although you can aslo lose credits as well if you are involved in a bad smash up. You can also hire specialist to help you complete missions. The Heist does get pretty samey pretty soon, but if you just want a quick game of something for 5 or 10 minutes then it is quite fun

I had to include one watersports racing game amongst all of these cars and tanks, and this is my favourite out of the ones that I have played today in my search for the best racing games. You can choose to play sinlge player or two player and you get to customize both your jetski and the rider before starting. You race against both other players and against the clock, with extra time being given when you pass a buoy, and you have to look out for the jumps which give you extra speed. if you can complete 3 laps without running out of time then you get the chance to enter your name in the high score table. It's a bit tame in places, but still a decent game.
