I love playing free online games, but they can be a bit hit and miss sometimes. There are some really great games out there, but unfortunately there is quite a lot of complete rubbish as well. That is why I have created this hub to highlight what I think are 5 of the best free online shooting games so that you can skip the crap and go straight to the good stuff.

All of the games that I have featured on this page are browser based flash games, which means that you don't have to become a member of anything, and you don't need to download any software. You can just follow the link which I have provided and start playing straight away. But if you don't mind signing up for a free account and downloading a game client then you way like to take a look at my review of Combat Arms, which is a free multiplayer online FPS (first person shooter) game.

I do enjoy playing topical games, and this is a great little recession revenge game subtitled 'murder madoff', where the ultimate goal is to kill the con man Bernie Madoff. In addition to shooting there are also other apsects to this game, such as smashing up a tv and beating up a receptionist with some fast mouse clicking, and steering your car through traffic in a race to the bank. It doesn't take long to complete the game, and once you have there's not enough to it to want to keep playing again and again, but it is still a very entertaining 10-20 minutes of free gaming and well worth a go.

When I first wrote this hubpage I had a zombie killing game here, but then I found sheep invaders, loved it, and had to come back to include it in this list. Sheep invaders is a remake of the classic arcade game 'space invaders', but instead of little ufo's coming down the screen at you it is row after row of sheeps. Most of the details of are the same as the original space invaders, from the three shelters that gradually get destroyed to the fact that the lines of sheep get faster as they get closer to the ground, to the fast moving bonus sheep which goes along the top of the screen from time to time. I really enjoyed this fun little game and definitely reccomend it.

If you just want a straight up 'target practice' style shooting game there aren't really any better free flash games than the Vinnie's shooting yard series. In number 4 you get a choice of three weapons - ninja shuriken throwing star, desert eagle handgun, or dragunov rifle with telescopic sights. You also get a choice of 8 different speeds (choose a slow speed when using the rifle, or by the time you've zoomed in there's no time to shoot) and you can also pick how many enemies you want to face.

This is an interesting twist on the Ninja stealth games where you have to sneak up on your enemies and kill them without getting spotted. As you probably guessed from the name of the game you play as a Ninja UFO and you fly around in a kind of platform game style environment shooting your enemies in the back. If they notice you you've had it, and there are various other tasks to complete. You complete the level by collected the required number of crates that are dotted all over the place, there are doors to open and electricity to switch off adding a mild puzzle element,  and there are parts of the environment where everything is dark except a small areas around you so that you have to explore carefully and react quickly when things pop up. You earn game cash by killing guards or destroying security lamps, and lose it for getting shot and / or killed. Quite a unique game, and good fun with it.

 If you're looking for a sniper game where you can hide yourself away and pick of your targets then you'll enjoy tactical assasin. Again you have missions to complete, but this time it's all about accuracy, control and picking the right target and you don't have to worry about getting shot yourself.
