I've already created a hub featuring my cjoice of the five best free sports games, but because I enjoy having the excuse to waste hours playing free online games whilst assuring myself that I'm doing something constructive and useful which making these hubs gives me, I've decided to get a bit more specific and pick out what I think are the 5 best free soccer games. Because there are fewer to choose from I think that I have actually managed to play quite a good proportion of the games which fall into this category, so hopefully this is a fairly reliable guide to the best ones. As always I have only chosen to feature flash games which you can play immediately with no download or membership required, and I have included links to places where you can find the best free games of other kinds. So take a look and enjoy playing!

Rather than putting you into an actual match of soccer between two teams this game is all about 'keepy upies' where you have to keep the ball up off the ground for as long as you can. You use the arrow keys to move and then the three keys ,r f and v to head, knee and kick the ball respectively. When you get into the right spot you can then use the space bar to perform your special move and shoot for goal, but you have to get the timing absolutely perfect the hit the ball with your big kick and get the goal. You can choose from a wide selection of national teams and play in their colours, and there are different environments to play in. The graphics are quite good, the difficuly level is about right making it hard but not too hard, and it is quite entertaining.

 This game created by Sky Sports is one of the few free games which include a full match between two teams. You can play single player against the cpu or two player against a friend. You can choose who you want to play as from various national teams, select the formation you want to play in, and whether you want to play a single friendly match or take part in a tournament. In game you just use the arrow keys to move plus shift to run and control for any action - to pass, shoot or tackle depending on whether you have the ball at your feet and where you are on the pitch. This is suprisingly good for a freebie.

Because it is hard to put everything that you would need for a full match into a free flash game, quite a few of these games focus in on just one part of the games, such as free kicks or penalties. In this game, as the name suggests, it is penalties. Using the mouse you take aim with cross hairs and click once for your run up and again to set the power, and try to score as many goals as you can. It is a very simple game but its food for five or ten minutes entertainment.

 It took me a little bit of time to get the hang of this game, not becuase its hard really but becuase its just unusual game play, but when I got into it i found this game quite addictive. You choose a team from the English premiere league and then take part in a table football tournement. You can pick you formation, and then you use the arrow keys to move your players left and right. When the ball comes into contact with a player they automatically hit it, which is one of the things I found strange, although you can hold down the space bar for a power shot. the angle that they hit the ball determines which direction it goes in, and you have to win your matches to progress through the tournament.

There a loads of free kick games out there and so it wasn't easy to make a choice about which one is best, but this is at least one of the better ones. To start off with you choose the direction you want to kick the ball in, then you select which part of the ball you want to kick so that you can curve the ball in the air, and then you have to time your click to get the right power on a power bar that is running up and down. Some of these free kick games I found really difficult to do, so this is probably one of the easier one, which you my or may not like it for. It probably won't keep you entertained for hours but I think its good for a quick game. You have to score 3 in a row to win.
