After around 3 or 4 hours hard work (lol!) playing as many free sports games as I could without getting repetitive strain injury in my mouse finger I can't claim to have played anywhere near all the games that are out there, nor can I claim to have a definitive list of the best ones, but I can claim to have sifted through a fair few rubbish games and picked out 5 good quality, fun and challenging free sports games. I enjoyed them all, and I hope you do too!
All of the games that I have chosen are free flash games, meaning that you don't need to sign up for a membership account and you don't need to download anything, you just follow the link and start playing straight away for free. And don't forget to take a look at some of the links that I have included here as well, for other top free online games.

Tennis Game
In this free tennis simulator game you can choose to play a single exhibition match or a tournement. For the tournament you get to choose your player, but you don't have a choice if you play a single match. Each player has a set skill level for forehands, backhands, serves and footwork, so you can play to your characters strengths by, for example, hitting more forehands or backhands according to which one your player is best at. Control of the player is done with the keyboard where you use the four arrow keys for the corresponding directions of movement and space bar to hit the ball. Pressing one of the arrow keys when you hit the ball controls which part of the court you hit the ball to, and you do have to be quite quick fingered to get good control over your movement and shot placement withthe same keys. Although the graphics are very basic the gameplay is suprisingly realistic, with the skill of winning coming from your choice of court position (serve and volley or backline etc.) and your placement of the ball over several shots to keep your opponent on the back foot, as much as from your ability to actually time your hits right to strike the ball. It is also really quite hard to win games when you first start playing, although winning the odd point isn't too difficult, which makes it really addictive as you try to play win the games and the tournament. I hope you enjoy playing this game as much as I did, because I really loved it!
Dirt Bike 2
In Dirt Bike 2 you have to keep your rider in his seat as he negotates rough ground and various obstacles on his dirt bike. Its done entirely using the arrow keys for forwards and backwards movement and to lean forwards or lean back on the bike to balance, land correctly or to pull up the front wheel to mount an obstacle. it is actually a lot harder than I was expecting it to be, and if you're anything like me then you will probably have to keep playing each level over and over again before you get it right. I found that the trick is mainly in getting the speed right so that you have the momentum to get over obstacles without losing control, as it is generally pretty obvious whether you should be leaning forwards or backwards especially after you have already fallen of once. Being so difficult is what makes this game addictive (and it really can be), but on the downside it can be a bit frustrating at times when you get a part of a course that you have to keep doing again and again because your falling off later on in the course, and even though you feel like your doing the same thing each time you try it you still have to have 10 goes before you get past it, only to fall off on the next part. But still, even taking this into account it is well worth a go.
Mini Putt 3
After featuring two really quite hard game I though I would pick once that is relatively easy to play, making it good if you fancy a quick game of something entertaining without having to keep playing for a while before you get the hang of it. As the name suggests this is a mini golf game, or crazy golf as we call it in Britain, which features 18 holes, par 2-5, with some interesting obastacles to get past. You use your mouse to place the ball in the start position you want, to aim and to choose how hard to hit it. On the earlier holes it seems to let you whack the ball into the holes at any speed you want, but you have to get more refined on the later ones or you will overshoot. Its pretty easy to hit par for each hole, but it is possible to get a hole in one on most of them and it's really satifying when you get them.

My pick of the best.
Kick Flip
I just had to include a skateboarding game in my top five list because I love playing them. There are loads of these kinds of free game out there that are all pretty similar, but I think that this is one of the best. There are loads of different tricks that you can do and you get various challenges to complete to move on to the next level. The more variety you put in the more points you get. You use the arrow keys, space for jumps and the ASD for kickflips, shuv its and grinds, and for each trick key you can get different moves by pressing the one of the arrow keys at the same time, or by doing them in combination. You can also do manuals. The variety of moves is the strong point for sure and the one weakness is that is the gameplay can be a bit unresponsive, but you can't expect miracles from a free game can you?
Baseball
This is a great little baseball game with nice graphics and two different game mode options. In arcade mode you get 10 pitches to simply score as many points as you can, or you can play 'bottom of the ninth' which places you in a scenario where you are 2 runs down with 3 outs left, and you have to try to win the game for your team. When the pitcher makes his throw a cross appears on the screen to show you where the ball is heading. Using your mouse you click to the to the left, right, above or below this cross to control where you are aiming for, and the skill of the game comes in timing your swing perfectly to get a sweet hit. Personally I really enjoyed this game for a few minutes, but i did get bored with it fast as the game play is pretty limited and repetitive. Still worth a few minutes of anyone's time though, I reckon.
