Not Just for Breakfast Anymore...

I wonder if, when Wordpress was first written, they realized all the varied ways their creation would be utilized? You may think a blog is a blog is a blog, but you'd be wrong. There are as many different ways to use Wordpress as there are people using it.

Wordpress is the preeminent blog service because it powerful, flexible and easy to use. Blog set up only takes a few moments and you can get started. There's no reason why everyone shouldn't have their own blog.

Here are a few ideas I came up with in just a few minutes on various ways to use a blog. I'm sure if I spent some time thinking about it, I could come up with a lot more.

In what creative way are you using Wordpress?

How to you use Wordpress?

Students

Use Wordpress as a study guide and notes database.  After a class or study session, summarize your learnings in a post.  Attach pictures or other aids.  Two great techniques for learning and memorization are to repeat what you have been told in your own words, and to write it down.  You are achieving both when you post in your blog.

Once you've posted it, you can return to it easily for review at any time.  Wordpress makes it easy to find what you are looking for with categories, tags and a search function, so you'll never lose your notes again.

If you want to share notes with a friend - no problem!  Just send them a link or post it to a social networking site (i.e., Facebook).  Discuss the topic using the comments features.

Athletes

Wordpress is a perfect aid for a dedicated athlete.

Post about goals and challenges.  This makes your goals publc and you accountable, a proven way to help keep you on track.  Visualize in writing what you hope to achieve and help cement that vision in your head - a method that world class athletes use to meet their goals.

Track stats, awards and schedules, which will keep them always available and easily accessible wherever you are (as long as there is internet available).  Upload pictures and videos of you performing for inspiration or critique.  Others who are into the same sport will undoubtedly find you, opening up a dialogue in the comments to discuss challenges, tips and tricks.

After a while, you will have a wonderful resource to go back and see how far you've come.  It's all right there in your blog!

Family Connectivity

Seems like families used to stay near each other, but these days, we can all roam far and wide.  Your sibling or parent may live on the other side of the country - or the other side of the world!

Use Wordpress to keep in touch in your everyday lives.  Set up each family member as a user and let them upload posts about what they are up to and pictures and videos of things they've done.  Use the comments feature to check in, discuss and argue.

Share recipes, baby's first steps and the big promotion at work.  Use a category for each person, and practically have a family tree!

Enhance your Resume

It's a tough market out there right now. How do you set yourself apart from all the other candidates?

Build a blog about the type of business you work in. Write articles that show your understanding of the industry; talk about your experiences and ideas for the future; link to related articles and resources.

When it's time to apply for that job, just put the url in the contact info area. You've just done three things:

  1. Given the employer something to remember you by; set yourself apart from the other candidates
  2. Proven the depth and breadth of your experience and understanding of the industry
  3. Shown that you stay abreast of what's happening in your industry - you're a go-getter

Create a Portfolio

This relates to the one above - if you're an artist or any kind of creative, you MUST have an online presence.  You have to show that you are technically savvy and provide a place for people to see your work.

What better way than with a Wordpress portfolio blog?  There are a lot of really cool themes out there that allow you to feature your works, whether they are animations, hand created artworks, jewelry, or whatever.

If you're applying for a creative position somewhere, put the url of your online portfolio with the hard copy portfolio you're showing at the office.  That way, they can see a much wider variety of your work at their own convenience and you've just shown you're a step ahead of the competition.

Think Outside the Box

These are only a few of the many ways Wordpress can be used to enhance your life. I hope these ideas spark some inspiration for you on how to get organized, get motivated or just have fun!
