67Congratulations
Congratulations, you are pregnant! Oh what an exciting time for you. There will be many new adventures for your future. Now that you know that you are pregnant here are some tips of five foods you will want to avoid for you and your coming little one.
5 Foods To Avoid
1. Fish – Fish can be very healthy for the average person, but the pregnant woman should avoid certain kinds of fish that contain high levels of mercury. A high level of mercury could put the baby at risk of developmental problems or can cause brain damage. The fish you want to avoid include; tuna, swordfish, shark, sea bass, and mackerel.
2. Lunchmeat – Processed lunchmeat that you make sandwiches out of and cold cuts from a deli. This type of meat can carry the bacteria Listeria, although it is relatively safe for the average person to eat it, a pregnant woman whose immunity resistance is low could become contaminated. Listeria can be very serious, it can cause a woman to miscarry or cause stillbirth.
3. Soft Cheeses – Soft cheeses that are unpasteurized can also carry Listeria. Some cheeses that may be harmful to your unborn include; Feta, Brie, Gorgonzola, Queso, and Camembert.
4. Raw eggs – During your pregnancy you should avoid any food containing raw eggs due to harmful bacteria that may be found in them, some foods that contain raw eggs are ice-cream, mayonnaise, Cookie dough, and some salad dressings. Be sure to avoid any foods that you are unsure about until you can consult a doctor.
5. Raw Meat- All meat should be fully cooked, Raw meat can carry a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. If infected the baby could develop hearing loss, mental retardation, or blindness.
To have a safe and healthy pregnancy and newborn baby, be sure to avoid these foods throughout your pregnancy. You can find more information about these foods and more just visit: http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~pregnant/while.html

LOL, Hawkesdream I am with you. In my early 40's I have my 2 boys, and 2 girls, I am set and done! Thank you for passing on the information. :-)
Also, avoid diet pop containing ASPERTANE and *anything* containing sugar substitutes! Ignore the nice nice ads - these are chemicals! Sugar is not.
Excellent tip Jama, I have never thought of that and I am sure that is something that every pregnant shoudl be aware of. Sugar is definitely a healthier and safer snack for everybody but especially expecting moms. Thank you so much for the comment Jama. :-)
have you heard of peanut butter being a problem? I ate quite a bit of it with my second pregnancy and my son is allergic to peanuts...go figure...
This is a great infromative Hub! Very interesting about the deli meat. Thumbs up

Wow I have been pregnant 3 times and didn't know not to eat deli meat? Which come to think of it I don't think I even did. I craved Taco Bell to much ha ha. But no, no more kids for me! Thanks for the info though I'll be sure to pass it along!
Hi Enelle Lamb, It is great to meet you! LOL, I have never heard of peanut butter being a problem. Sorry to hear that your son is allergic. I laugh because when I was pregnant with my first I ate a lot of strawberries and my son ended up not only allergic to them, but he also has a birthmark that looks exactly like a strawberry on his leg. Hmm, now the peanut butter and strawberry thing has got me thinking. I might do some research on the effects of too much common foods eaten while pregnant. Thank you so much for visiting and sharing your very interesting story. :-)
Hey fortunerep, It is great to see you my friend. Thank you for visiting and the nice comments. :-)
Hi Alissa 1985, Thank you for visiting and sharing. I don't think I ate too much deli meats either, but mine was because of too much morning sickness. The taco bell sounds more appetizing than a sandwich anyways. Thanks for sharing and passing on the info :-)
P.S 1985 was a good year for me, I graduated from High School that year! Yes, I know that would put me at umm, err, 29 years old? :-)
