Why use Photoshop?

Photoshop is the most popular image editing software, and probably used by every graphic design or webdesign agency around the globe.

While there are other tools that are free like The Gimp or Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop still stands out as the only really professional solution for a wide range of image editing functions.

So now the real question is: what should I do to improve my Photoshop skills?


Learn it

Of course, there is much more to say on how to learn Photoshop, but just start by reading these 5 little tips.

  1. Know your layers

    You definitly have to know how to use layers to do anything important in that software. Learn it, play with transparency and effects, and arrange them properly by renaming them and grouping them.
  2. Combine filters

    Filters are a good way to add some effect to your image or photo. Be careful with them because they can quickly turn your image into something not so tasteful. But by combining filters with the right dosage, you can really enhance your pics.
  3. Create patterns

    Patterns are a good way to enhance your background or create more graphical images. Create some and you'll be happy when having the opportunity to use them.
  4. Use brushes

    Just as for patterns, brushes are a great way to enhance your photos or images. They'll help you to create nice shapes and be more creative with your software. Many are created by graphic design artists around the web, you just have to know where to go to download Photoshop brushes.
  5. Master scripts

    One thing that you surely have to know if you are going to use Photoshop a lot is scripts, they'll get you to save plenty of time by automating repetitive tasks, such as resizing images, resampling them or changing color profiles...
