5 Places You Should Never Use Your Laptop

If you are never quite sure what is appropriate and what is not in life, then this article is for you. Laptop computers are super convenient because you can take them with you anywhere you go. You can take them on the airplane, the public bus, and the train. They can be used on a park bench, in a coffee shop, or at the library. Laptops come in different sizes and weights, making some easier to carry around than others. The possibilities are endless.

However, this doesn't mean you should use your laptop everywhere. There are some places that are completely inappropriate to use your laptop, and you need to be aware of that. In fact, there are at least five places you should never use your laptop.

In the Car

You might get away with using a laptop in your car if you are not driving. But if you are driving, do not even think about touching that laptop. Seriously, there is no way you can type or surf the internet while safely driving. You don't want to be the reason they put "Laptop Free Driving" legislation in place, do you? When it comes to driving, keep your hands on the wheel, not on your computer. I know you might want to check the traffic conditions while on the road, but doing so with your laptop will probably make you the cause for a lot more traffic backups.

In the Theater

It doesn’t matter if it is a live theater or a movie theater—don’t do it. First of all, it is simply rude to be typing away on your computer in a venue like this. Second, even if you type quietly, the light from the screen will be a distraction to the other people in the audience. If you enjoy being pelted with milkduds and cups of soda, go ahead and do this. But don’t say I didn’t warn you when the big guy sitting behind you tosses you out of the fire exit door within the first twenty minutes of the movie. I’m guessing you won’t get a refund.

In Church

You shouldn't even bring your laptop to church with you at all, but definitely don't pull it out during mass. I don't care if you are bored, it is completely unacceptable to use your computer during a church service. Keep the laptop closed and turned off until you leave the building. And, no, doing internet research to refute what is said during the sermon still doesn't give you the green light.

On the Toilet

If you insist on using your laptop while on the toilet, just never, ever tell anyone. Definitely don't use Skype with your webcam while doing your business. I shouldn't have to say it, but (unfortunately) I do: don't use your laptop while using a public bathroom. They do not make self-sanitizing laptops, so just don't do it. It is completely disgusting to bring something like that into the bathroom with you. There really is no point. I mean, what are you thinking?

In the Bathtub

Would you use a hairdryer while taking a bath? Uh, no. So don't use your laptop while taking a bubble bath (or even a bubbleless bath). It simply isn't cool or safe. I know a lot of people read while relaxing in the bathtub, but they read books! Not websites. Even if you are sure you can balance it nicely on your knees or the edge of the tub, just don't do it or you could end up with quite a shock. Literally.

On the toilet! Haha. I think my dad used to take his laptop to the bathroom. I could be wrong. But I vaguely remember a time or two way back when. Ha.

Objection! Laptops in churches are totally cool. I ran the multimedia stuff for our church for a while and I had free reign. Also, with the rise of Power Point, and Bible software for computers/PDAs, computers, PDAs, etc. are fair game now. Our Pastor reads from his Bible/Palm Pilot quite often, and when I first saw him do it I knew I was home.

Great hub, though. Good luck.

Peter, that is an exception. I don't mean people who are helping out!

My laptop drove around Australia running the interactive maps to point us in the right direction - though not used by the driver. What does Ms Manner's say about using it at the dinner table?

Lissie, that's a great use for a computer in the car, but like you said--not by the driver. I'm sure Ms. Manners would consider computer use at the dinner table as impolite as telephone use.

If a hub could be both funny and serious, this hub is that hub! Thank you, Stacie!

Great Hub Stacie!

When I saw the title I immediately thought of two of your five; only because I have actually seen it happen. So, your hub is definitely appropriate... and funny!

Nice, it's always good to read a well written hub, you'd think that not using them in those places is pretty obvious but I must admit, I'm guilty on more then one occasion on more then one instance! great hub :)
