While it is easy to purchase autographs with a high level of confidence of its authenticity, most people buy forgeries. The biggest problem with forgeries is that you normally do not find out about them until you try to sell or get it authenticated. Don’t be another victim. Follow these simple rules while making an investment in an autograph.

Rule 1: Do your Homework. You do not need to be an expert in authenticating autographs, however you should have an idea of the pricing of the item you are trying to purchase, and who the reputable dealers, auctions houses, and authenticators that serve the sports market. You should also know the sellers to avoid, so you do not get taken as many people who do not do their homework. Research websites of known dealers, as well as eBay and auction houses and talk to dealers to learn more about the players you have interest in, and the prices you should expect to have to pay.

Rule 2: Know What is Rare. If you are looking to purchase an Autographed Bat or Jersey of Babe Ruth, you should know that you can expect to pay well over $10,000. If you find a dealer that is offering one for $1,000 with a Certificate of Authenticity you can assume with certainty that this is a forgery. Although there have been exceptions where owners unfamiliar with the pricing of Collectibles have offered them at a very low price, you can assume these are rare exceptions and you will not be one of the lucky ones to find it.

Rule 3: Buy only from Respected Dealers and Websites. We can not emphasize this enough. If you are making a significant investment in an Autograph buy only from dealers that are well respected and have been in business for a number of years. If you think you are getting a great deal you are most likely not getting a deal at all. If you are buying on eBay check what the Return Policy is and make sure that if you choose to send the item to get authenticated and it does not pass, you have the right to return it for a full refund.

Rule 4: Buy an Authenticated Autograph or have it Authenticated right away by a Widely Accepted Authenticator. Protect yourself from forgeries, and make sure you will get your return on investment if you choose to sell the item at a later date. If it is a Sports Collectible, buy only items that are authenticated by PSA/DNA, GAI, or Beckett/JSA. Note that Trade Card manufacturer’s are now distributing a significant number of Autographed cards/items. These are also totally acceptable as authentic.

Rule 5: Pay by Credit Card or PayPal if purchased via eBay. Paying by credit card can provide significant protection against losing your investment. Most Credit Cards offer a buyer’s assurance program to protect you against problems when you buy. Know how long you have to file a complaint, and if you are planning to have the item Authenticated pay the extra price for expediting to insure you are fully protected.
