5 Strange Things French People like

France. Old culture, even older country, the bearer of all things highbrow, the keeper of the cultural gate, beautiful language, delicious food, makes us all envious BUT . . .

After spending one week with 12 French students in a bootcamp style English intensive camp, I can tell you the French enjoy their "trash" too. The students ranged in age from 21 to about 45 so this was not just a question of young French minds who hadn't developed the ability to "discern".

1. The Smurfs

I must have heard the students talk about the Smurfs 100 times. They wanted to know what the word in English was, my favorite Smurf, favorite episode, which one I'd be, etc. I heard them say the word in French, Les Schtroumpfs, many times. No matter what age they all discussed them. I asked if they had made a comeback and were popular again and was told no, they never stopped being popular

2. Queen and Freddy Mercury

I have been known to like Queen and Freddy Mercury but I was always properly "embarrassed" about it. I mean can you really like Bohemian Rhapsody? We Are the Champions is now corny, "ringard" in French, even at sporting events. These French students all loved Queen. Queen has been popular since the mid seventies in France they tell me. They only got more popular when Freddy Mercury died and have never been considered cheesy. I know French rock music is a little sad but we have much better to offer you than Queen.

3. Jim Carrey

I had heard the French love Jerry Lewis. Now that I live here I have to say I have never heard a single French person mention his name. I must conclude that they either never liked him or no longer like him. It doesn't really matter because Jim Carrey has taken his place. We watched a Jim Carrey movie in English with the English subtitles on one day. They laughed from the start to the finish in big, loud, roaring, sidesplitting outbursts. After the movie they went on to describe his movies, their favorite lines, his gestures, etc. It's a strange world we live in.

4. The Tecktonik

This is a dance that lies somewhere between break dancing and breaking ones leg. Actually I have heard it said that it is exactly between Krump dancing and the Wu Tang. While I find it amusing and saw it a few times while walking the streets, I can't say it is very graceful. Maybe it is just an assumption that a dance should be graceful. Anyway, not all the French love this dance but it has appeared on every major news channel this year and "the kids" are certainly doing it.

5. Comic Books, Bande Dessiné

In the US comic books are for kids and graphic novels are for "struggling readers". In France there is a famous convention for Bande Dessiné in Angoulème, for kids and adults. The French love their comics, and not just the childish kind. I have to admit that the story lines of Bande Dessiné are much better than that of the comic books but still. Maybe I am the snob, I just couldn't sit there, on a train, reading a bande dessiné, in France. My students were asking if it were true that Americans thought BD were for kids, incredulously. What a role reversal.

Tecktonik? I love it. Dance it every weekend although I am not "that" young, but I think it is fun to watch! Also the Smurfs are in my list of favorites :)

Hi Owen, I´m glad you published your first hub! Great one by the way ;)

If you think French people like strange things you should see Portuguese people they even like French people :D LOL. Now seriously, it´s great to watch "Les Schtroumpfs" and hear the "Bohemian Rhapsody". Jim Carrey!? I still prefer Jerry Lewis, but my favorite has to be Peter Sellers :)

@PrincessaI don't dance tecktonik but I do love watching it. There is a certain grace but it definitely does not conform to an American's stadards of what the French would like, too low brow.

@FunrideI"m a little puzzled by Jim Carrey as well. The only reason we watched it was because they had about 10 videos to choose from and Jim Carrey was by far the choice that most interested them.

I'm with you about Peter Sellers though. He's British though, no? What American comics are realy that funny?

I just found out that the Smurfs were made by a Belgian and that goes a long way to help understand why The French are so enamoured with them. I just coldn't understand it, although they generally look down on the Belgians worse than Americans.

Le Tecktonik looks like quite a workout--loved the video ....especially that kid's shoes--watched it a couple of times. Thanks for taking us to bootcamp with you and the students BTW--what were you all studying? Just curious.

I'll check out your links soon.

My students are engineering graduate students who are studying Air Traffic Controlling and things related to Aviation. They take academic courses in general English and aviation English. The bootcamp is designed to improve everyday fluency. We do basic things but just try to engage them in real situations and real dialogs in order to get them speaking. One of the evaluation comments said that they learned more about English during our interactions on the breaks and at the meals than during formal lessons. Since it is all in English it doesn't really matter. What matters is that they come back speaking better and are more confident.

One of them even dances the tecktonik, I have a video somewhere.

francetales,

My friends had a exchange student living with them from France and it was quite interesting to learn about the similarities and the differences that we share. The Smurfs? Unbelievable, they haven't been around for years, have they? The dance was fun to watch, and I am with Robie I loved the shoes! Great first Hub, welcome to Hubpages.

The Smurfs are strange but since they come from Europe I begin to understand. Big colorful clunky 80's shoes are big right now in France, I like to look but wouldn't like to wear them. Cultural differences are strange, some predictable and some not.

I was in a very trendy French club, a few years back, and Queen tracks kept on geting played. That was very weird.

Perhaps the 6th Strange Thing they like is the English!

Hey - I like Queen and Jim Carrey. But it's true the music played in France seems very dated to our ears. But that's one of the reasons I love France.

Things don't go out of style music wise as quickly as they do in the US for example. Once the French like someone I get the feeling they like them forever, or a long time at least. We watched some kind of a variety show on TV last night and there were muscians of all style and genres together. I was amazed at the variety and everyone, young and old, seemed to be enjoying themselves. It really isn't that strange but from where I come from it is.
