5 THINGS

  1. PAY BILLS ON TIME: Always, always, always pay your bills on time and before their due dates. Late payments will always lower your credit score. Improving your score requires consistently paying all of your bills on time.
  2. BALANCES: Pay down balances on revolving credit accounts such as store cards. Low credit balances (ex $500) and high credit limits (ex $1000) around 50% are interpreted by lenders as a sign of great  credit management. Keeping your balances low raises your score.
  3. PAY MORE: The rule of thumbs is to always pay more than the minimum amount on revolving accounts. If you're minimum is $10, pay $20 or more.
  4. DON'T GO OVER: Another rule of thumb is to never let your credit balances exceed their limits and to never bounce checks or overdraw your accounts. In other words, don't spend money you don't have.
  5. CHECK YOUR SCORE: Always check your credit report. A minimum of twice a year will help monitor your progress and get detailed information about your credit profile.
