Cellular phone or more commonly known as cell phone or hand-phone is a popular gadget and has now became an indispensable mean of communication in this modern era, however other than making call, sending SMSes, listening to music or surfing the net etc, there are somethings unknown to many but might come in handy for all. Below is a list of few things that you might not know you could do with your phone.

1. The secret emergency number

Okay, you might say who doesn't know the emergency hot-line number? Everyone could dial 911 right? But consider this situation, you're in an emergency and there's no line on your cell phone, or you're in a foreign land and you don't know who to call, so what would you do?

The solution is dial 112, by calling this number your mobile phone will search existing network in that area and it will establish an emergency number for you. And 112 is the only number you could dial even if your phone's keypad is locked. Don't trust me? try it yourself.

2. Remote car key

Have you ever lock yourself out of your own car? I have, and I have to say it is one of my worst experience ever, because i was outstation at the time and hundreds of miles away from my home where I had left my spare keys, I had no one to turn to and i had to find the nearest blacksmith that could open the car lock for me. I had to cancel all of my plan that day and my business trip was a failure thanks to that. But if you had a hand-phone with you and have a spare remote car key, you're saved from all those frustration.

Here is what you need to do, you need to call anyone who can get access to your spare remote car key with your cell phone. Next, have the person with the remote press the unlock button, and what you do next is point your cell phone about a foot away towards your car while the other person push the unlock button. and your car should unlock. I've tried it already and it works fine. Have a try for yourself to see if it works.

3. Lost or stolen phones

I don't know if this had ever happened to you but I have witnessed a few of my friends fell victim to pick pockets and their cell phone got stolen and some lost their phone while commuting, the fortunate thing is that they had backup to their important contact. The unfortunate thing is well.... they lost their phone. Be it pick pocket or losing a phone by accident, it can be very frustrating.

What I cannot show you is how you can recover your cell phone, but what i can show you is how to disable the cell phone you've lost by disabling it, of couse you'll need some preparation beforehand. What you need to do is code in *#06# into your cell phone and it will display your cell phone's serial number, this serial number is unique to each phone, write that down and keep it in a safe place, if the unfortunate happen and you lose your phone, you can call your service provider and give them the serial number you had, they'll disable the phone rendering the phone useless even when the other person replace the SIM card in it. Now you can rest assured that no one can use your phone ever again. If everyone do this there won't be a point to steal other people's cell phone anymore.

4. Precaution before buying a cell phone

This is a step to prevent you being cheated into purchasing what you thought it is but isn't. Code in *#0000# and it will show you the manufacturing date the phone. Then you can identify whether the phone is new or old. The bad news is however whether it work on certain phone is not determined, I've tried it on Nokia phone and it worked but when I tried it on a Motorola phone it didn't work. You could try it and post comment here whether it worked on other brands of cell phone.

5. Hidden battery power

As cool as this may seem, however, it seems this trick only works with Nokia phone and it may vary with different model. The reason for this is that all Nokia phone comes equip with a reserve power source. To activate this power source all you need to do is simply push *3370# and your phone will restart with a 50% increase in battery strength and this reserve will recharge the next time you charge your phone. This will come in handy when you're expecting an important call but have little battery left.

(I was informed that this feature might not work in newer model, but you could always have a try, to see if it works.)
