Why We Should Include Them In Our Diet

About 10% of Americans are affected by clinical depression each year. Almost every one of us has a depressive episode at least once in a lifetime. Clinical depression is a condition, when certain chemicals in our brain or neurotransmitters are pushed off course. What causes that imbalance? Trauma, drug use, family history of depression - all thsese factors can trigger changes in the brains. Although it is not always necessary to reach for antidepressants without trying to revise your diet first.

Here are the best food choices you can make to enhance your mood.

  • Asparagus is a perennial member of the lily family, extremelly healthy and good for those who suffer from clinical depression as it stimulates the brain activity and rejuvenates the nervous system. Asparagus preserves all vitamins and minerals if steam cooked or roasted with a bit of olive oil in aluminum foil.
  • Salmon is a cold-water fish that contains omega-3 acid. Apart from other health benefits from eating salmon and other omega-3-rich foods it can lift symptoms of depression by affecting neurotransmitter pathways in the brain.
  • Flaxseeds is a member of the genus Linum in the family Linaceae. These seeds contain high levels of lignans and Omega-3 fatty acids. Lignans prevent certain types of cancer and stabilyze the blood sugar levels and omega-3 acids enhance the mood. Flaxseeds can be used as a salad or cereal topping.
  • Ginger root is an excellent source of antioxidants, which maintain the brain healthy and slows down brain aging. Grated ginger root with fresh lemon juice and honey makes a perfect sauce that helps digestion.
  • Replace sugar with stevia. Stevia is an herb native to Paraguay and Brasil that has been used for centuries as a sweetener. It contains no calories and no carbs and 30 times sweeter than sugar. In 2008 stevia was approved by the FDA as a food additive, previously it was sold only as a dietary supplement. Stevia also does not raise blood sugar so is a good choice for diabetics. Replacing sugar with stevia will enhance your mood without affecting your well-being.
