Pizza Dough - Available in Your Local Grocery Store

Usually found in the refrigerated section near the cheese or fresh pasta, store-made pizza dough is one of those supermarket bargains that you shouldn't ignore. It's fairly inexpensive, all the prep work is done for you and there are a multitude of ways to use it. As a busy mom, I'm always looking for a shortcut without resorting to buying whole premade meals or ordering in. Store bought pizza dough is a great way to make quick and tasty homemade meals that even your kids can help with.

Remember these things...

  • Use or freeze pizza dough within 2 days of buying.
  • Allow to come to room temperature before working the dough for best results.
  • Pizza dough cooks best under high heat for a short period of time. Set a timer so you don't forget!
  • You are only limited by your imagination - if you like a certain flavor or topping, add it!

Ham and Cheese Roll Ups

For this recipe, you will need:

  • one package store bought pizza dough
  • 12 slices deli ham
  • 6 slices deli cheese (american, swiss or provolone)
  • non-stick spray
  • dusting of flour

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Spray a baking tray with non-stick cooking spray. Roll out the pizza dough (already brought to room temp) on a floured surface. Cut into 6 squares, then half each square to make 2 triangles, for a total of 12 triangles. On each triangle, lay one slice of ham (folded over if necessary), then one half slice of cheese. Starting at the wide end, begin rolling up. It is OK for the ham and cheese to show through the sides. Place the roll ups on the baking tray and bake for 15 minutes or until brown and crispy on top. These are great served warm, room temperature or even right out of the refrigerator.

Hand Held Veggie Snacks

For this recipe you will need:

  • one package store bought pizza dough
  • 1/2 cup broccoli florets
  • 1/2 cup bell pepper, diced
  • 1/4 cup mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 cup whipped cream cheese
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • non-stick cooking spray
  • flour for dusting

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Spray a baking tray with non-stick cooking spray. In a large pan, heat olive oil over medium high heat and cook broccoli, pepper and mushrooms for about 5 minutes or until tender. Put cooked vegetables in bowl, and add cream cheese and mix to combine. Roll out the pizza dough on floured surface. Cut into 6 squares. Spoon some of the vegetable mixture into the middle of each square. Fold dough over filling, and pinch sides to seal. Place onto baking tray and bake in oven for 15 minutes, or until crust is brown. These are best served warm or at room temperature.

Garlic Knots

Why settle for delivery garlic knots that are soggy by the time you get them when you can make your own fresh ones at home? For this recipe you will need:

  • one package store bought pizza dough
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 gloves of garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. In large bowl, combine olive oil and garlic at bottom. Using kitchen scissors or a knife, cut off 1 inch pieces of the pizza dough, dropping them into the bowl with the garlic/oil mixture. Toss them gently and place on a baking tray. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until golden brown. These are best served immediately.

Veggie and Goat Cheese Pizza

Of course you can make pizza at home with store bought pizza dough. Besides saving a lot of money by making homemade pizza, you can put in it what you like and leave out what you don't!

This recipe is one of my family's favorite, and we haven't found it's equal from any of our local delivery places. For this recipe you will need:

  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1/4 eggplant, diced (skin fully or partly removed)
  • 1 zucchini, diced

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small log goat cheese (or about 1/2 cup) crumbled
  • Flour for dusting
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Preheat your oven to 425 degrees. Use about a tablespoon of the oil to grease a baking tray. Roll out the pizza dough to fit your baking tray (about, doesn't have to fit perfectly) and place on greased baking tray. In large skillet, heat the remaining olive oil over medium high heat and add the pepper, eggplant, onion and zucchini. When they are tender, about 6 minutes, add the garlic and remove from heat. Spoon and spread the vegetable mixture on top of the pizza dough. Drop the goat cheese pieces all over the vegetables and leave as crumbles. Add salt and pepper to taste. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the bottom of the pizza is brown and crusty. Slice and serve immediately or at room temperature.

Cinamon Sugar Dessert Bites

This makes a great and quick dessert. For this recipe you will need:

  • one package store bought pizza dough
  • 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Add the melted butter to a large bowl. Using a kitchen scissor or knife, cut 1 inch pieces from the dough and drop into the bowl. Mix gently to make sure each piece has butter on it. Place on a baking tray and sprinkle the cinnamon and sugar over each piece. Bake for about 8-10 minutes, or until dough is brown and crusty. These are best served immediately.

I am in for the Garlic knots... they sound yummy!

An easy recipe that I like making with the pizza dough is just cutting in slices some Maroilles cheese and arranging them on top of the dough, sprinkle with salt and pepper and a little bit of fresh cream. Bake until golden crispy and enjoy with a salad. Stinks to high heaven but it is delicious...

Princessa - the garlic knots are also great because they are baked, and I think most pizza places fry theirs. Mmmm, your recipe sounds great!

Fabulous ideas. I love the veggie and goat cheese - yum. We used to buy the pizza dough from Trader Joe's, but haven't in awhile. Maybe it is time to start again.

Basic Pizza Crust..add ingredients according to your bread machine's order .you know they are all a bit different right?

Also use the dough setting...  :o)

2 1/4 to 2 3/4 cups flour  (any kind)  I use rice, wheat. unbleached organic. Whatever is to your liking

1 tsp. sugar

1tsp. salt

1 pkg. Fast-acting Yeast (or regular is what I use)

1 cup water heated to 120 - 130 degrees (hot out of tap works)

2 tblsp. Olive or Vegie oil

let it do it's thing in the bread machine. When done you  knead.. put some flour on your working area and punch down..Loosely wrap in plastic wrap or in a bowl covered with wet towel or plastic wrap. 80 - 85  degree area.  Let rise for about 30 min.or until doubled in size.

Punch down dough until air bubbles are removed and divide in half. Roll dough into whatever shape you want and place on pizza pan or square cookie sheet. round or square or diamond :o)   spread desired amount of sauce and whatever toppings you want.  Bake at 425 degrees until crust is deep golden brown.

The sugar in the recipe helps it get that golden brown color.. and the yeast needs it too.  Have fun and hope you like this recipe.  You can freeze it for a couple of weeks.

G-Ma :o) hugs
