There are, however, quite a few foods that we can eat that are known to be beneficial for people who suffer from high blood pressure. Not only will they help your body naturally correct itself, but most foods that lower blood pressure are also very nutritious and the perfect additions to a healthy diet.

  • Avocado – Avocados are very high in calcium and magnesium, both of which are essential in the body’s regulation of blood pressure. It is also high in heart healthy fats.
  • Banana – Bananas are widely known to be very high in potassium, which is frequently used as a substitute for salt in low sodium diets.
  • Fish – Speaking primarily of fatty cold water fish, to be precise. Fish are high in omega 3 fatty acids, which are very good for your heart. People tend to forget that the body needs some fats to function correctly, and omega 3s are very good for you. When choosing fish, sushi and sashimi are the best choices, but a little tuna salad made with olive oil instead of mayo can be a fine choice also.
  • Garlic – Garlic is one of the most effective foods that lower blood pressure in nature. Not only does garlic act as a natural blood thinner by interfering with the blood platelets’ ability to bind up, but garlic also increases the body’s production of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a compound that causes blood vessels to relax and dilate.
  • Spinach – Spinach is high in two nutrients that are very beneficial in the treatment of hypertension: folate and magnesium. It is also one of the easiest foods to work into a healthy diet. It can be braised, sautéed, added to sandwiches, eaten as a salad, or more. The possibilities are endless.
  • Tomatoes – The tomato is a nutritious fruit that is packed with vitamins and minerals. It contains magnesium, calcium, and a huge number of antioxidants. Tomatoes are almost as versatile as spinach in their ability to be added to a huge number of dishes.
  • Combinations – Combine healthy foods for a double or even triple punch of healthy goodness. Sautee garlic and spinach together to serve alongside a piece of grilled salmon dressed with olive oil and tomatoes.

As you can see, there are quite a variety of foods that lower blood pressure. If your hypertension is mild to moderate, you should be able to correct it with some minor lifestyle changes, but if your blood pressure is dangerously high, you may want to consider temporarily using medications until you are able to bring your numbers down on your own.
