Many people are confused about the whole "eat more, lose more weight" theory. The reason why you're supposed to eat more to lose weight is because you're trying to fool your metabolism and manipulate it to burn more calories. Many people who do low calorie diets and essentially starve themselves will lose weight, but the weight that they're losing is muscle weight, not fat. When your body is starving, your metabolism starts slowing down and turns calories to fat so that your body can starve. You are basically telling your metabolism that there is no food and that you're starving. Your body in return plays defense and will store everything that it consumes because naturally, it thinks if it doesn't store calories, you will die. You know you're not dying, but you're body's instincts do not know that!
In order to common "starvation mode" when dieting, you need to eat more meals. You end up eating MORE meals (6 small meals), but LESS per meals. So you are basically spreading out three meals throughout the day. This way, you won't starve and you trick your metabolism into thinking that food is not scarce and that it's OK to burn the calories that you're consuming.
The other side of the Michael Thurmond program is that you are eating foods that will help you burn more calories throughout the day. Not all "healthy" food helps people lose weight. Some people actually need red meat to burn fat while other people should not eat red meat because it makes them bulk up. I personally should not eat red meat because I'm already bulky and it's easy for me to maintain lean muscle mass.
The last step for increasing metabolism (besides eating more meals per day), is to exercise. Many people cringe when thinking about exercise, but it's not as bad as you think it is. Try going for a 30 minute walk a few days a week. You spend this much time on the couch every night watching the news. Why don't go outside, get some fresh air, put on some music and go for a walk around the block. Take your dog! Take your kids! The key is to increase your heart rate into the fat burning zone. These two things will knock the fat out of your body.
