Music for Baby Boomers
60Old Faves for Old Farts Like Me
The Beatles' hit "When I'm 64" was released in 1967. I was 10. I couldn't picture myself being 24, let alone 64. Well, let me tell you something. As a '57 classic (not a Chevy, tho), I'm actually towards the tail end of the Baby Boomer generation. This means that many of the Beatles' original audience has already passed the 60 mark and is rolling into their golden years. The rest of us Boomers are reconciling ourselves to middle age --and the bodily failings that come with it.
A friend of mine (who is in his 60s and actuallly quite good natured about it) sent this funny list via email. I thought I'd share.
Here's the deal. Several artists of the 60's are revising their hits with new lyrics to accommodate aging baby boomers. I've provided the new names, followed by videos of the original hits.
Now, if you're one of those young whippersnappers still under 30, go ahead and laugh if you want to. It won't be that long until this type of "oldies" list will be updated with the likes of Lil Wayne, Shakira, Coldpay and Keith Urban.
Bobby Darin --- Splish, Splash, I Was Havin' a Flash.
Roberta Flack---
The First Time Ever I Forgot Your Face.
Herman's Hermits ---
Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Walker.
Johnny Nash ---
I Can't See Clearly Now.
Ringo Starr ---
I Get By With a Little Help From Depends.
The Bee Gees -- -
How Can You Mend a Broken Hip.
Paul Simon---
Fifty Ways to Lose Your Liver
The Commodores ---
Once, Twice, Three Times to the Bathroom.
Marvin Gaye ---
Heard It Through the Grape Nuts.
Procol Harem---
A Whiter Shade of Hair.
Leo Sayer ---
You Make Me Feel Like Napping.
The Temptations ---
Papa's Got a Kidney Stone.
Abba--- > Denture Queen.
Tony Orlando ---
Knock 3 Times On The Ceiling If You Hear Me Fall.
Helen Reddy --- I Am Woman, Hear Me Snore.
Leslie Gore---
It's My Procedure, and I'll Cry if I want To
And Last but NOT least... Willie Nelson --- On the Commode Again

MM, Good things never go out of style. I can't speak for the rest of the whippersnappers out there, but its still good music and the new titles just give it new life.
Great job MM. Oh those were the days. isn't that from Archie and Edith Bunker?
Great hub MM.....I love the Bee Gees. "Jive Talkin'" was the first 45 I bought with my own money. I still have it.
Btw, i've been downloading Peter Paul and Mary and the Mammas and the Pappas and some other folk rock (i might be using the term loosely) music... i'm rebelling I guess! so if you have recommendations.... :D
Knockin on heavens door by Bob Dylan ,just an absolute masterpiece ! And Sitting on the dock of the bay by Otis Redding ! I feel very fortunate to have grown up when music was so exciting !
Thanks M&M! Just reflecting back when all we were saying is give peace a chance!
Dancing Queen is one of these songs that makes me want to, well, dance! :-) I love what you say about readers under 30 laughing about this, and I can already see a Shakira return in about 20 years time to make today's kids dig it! Laugh!
Thanks dear friends for bearing with this hub in process. I FINALLY got all the videos in -- all the way down to Willie Nelson.
These songs do take us back, don't they?
Hmmm. old folk music? I suggest Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez.
ABBA is timeless. I haven't yet seen "Mama Mia" but loved the movie Muriel's Wedding that put Toni Collette on the map. She's a great actress.
This was hillarious MM. I laugh my butt off.
One of my most favorite all time song was by the Bee Gees, Love me, Please. It didn't make it too popular.
And I loved the first pictures of the old time Hippies. Here in Iowa, all of these old time hippies ride Harley's
Keep on Hubbing!
Hello eovery! I will have to check out that Bee Gees song. My personal fave by them is "Words" (so dramatic when his voice breaks up).
Great list, and a great little laugh at growing older. I hope I am that good natured about it when I get a little older. Just hitting 30 this year! BTW, I Love all the music on here!! Especially Mrs. Brown, you've got a lovely daughter. A friend's last name is Brown, and I play that song for her all the time. She gets a kick out of it.
Anna Marie -- you are wise beyond your years, for sure! Just hitting 30. Ah, that makes me nostalgic. But we can't go backward, can we?
I am interested in reactions from people who did not grow up with this music as I did. I have this theory that we all imprint things -- songs, especially -- from our formative years. Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter is closely associated in my mind with (are you ready?) elementary school. Some of these song (ones from the 70s) I would just as soon forget. I'm a feminist, but Helen Reddy is over the top with that roaring shit!
MM, you're hub captions are incredibly mean... and I was rolling the whole time!
That's not nice!!!
I REMEMBER the Hermin's Hermits song. God, I'm ancient! And two of my all-time favorite songs are still "Whiter Shade of Pale" (have you ever heard the Sammy Hagar remake with HSAS?) and "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone."
I can't believe it but I found a live performance video on YouTube! Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpw_Hx-ABrM
Hi CW, You are not ancient, WE are ancient! I believe we are the same age -- at least chronologically. Thanks for the link. And for sharing music and memories w/me! MM
You mean we're both a couple of "old farts"?
Damn!
You're welcome. I was completely amazed that the video was there - and live!!! Did you see how young Sammy Hagar and Neal Schon (Journey guitarist) were?
Ha! found ya C.W. stalking ya... I do not know what to say except You seem to be reading my favorite peoples hubs before me as I'm taking a breather in between writing articles.
M.M. Sorry I took away from your hub but the 'old fart' C.W. accused me of stalking him... after a comment like that I might just have to 'unfriend' him for a bit...
M.M. Now for your great hub...great style of fashion...greatest of great music...great and unfortunately true quotes...oops I think my '53 date is showing...na I'm a spring chicken with a little less spring then I used to have...that's all
Whats funny is that each of my three children love this era's music (they might not admit to loving it but they know the words and sing along when its blarring at my house...(blarring because its hip not because my hearing is not what it used to be either...don't tell them)
I loved the hub kindest regards Zsuzsy
I wish I could take credit for the captions -- I did not write them. I got them from a friend. But they ARE true (at least some of them:-). Still, I try to maintain a "You're as young as you feel" attitude.
Zsuzsybee -- Good to know I've got a sistah who loves these classics as much as I do. I love the fact that your kids listen to them and sing along! How cool is that!!!
CW and Zsuzsy -- CW only WISHES he could get someone as hot as you to stalk him! Seriously, I'm finding that pretty much every time I log into HP I follow someone I know and trust will lead me to good hubs. If someone has good taste (or sometimes I follow hubbers with notoriously BAD taste) I know I will be entertained. Maybe it's time to expand our horizons and start stalking some new hubbers. Nah -- we wouldn't want to scare them away, would we now!??
P.S. to CW. Oddly enough, the video is now GONE. It's no longer available! What happened??? MM
Benjamin Buttons is on my all time list. just amazing. sorry, overheard the conversation. Happy Valentines Day MM.
Hey, thanks GT. I'm sure I will enjoy it. One of those films that I balk at seeing but then realize how stupid I was. Other examples: Schindler's List and Platoon and Pulp Fiction.
Hope the Toads have a wonderful V-Day also. So, are you and the Missus getting a babysitter for reals tonight? Or maybe you'll be hooking up with the midget again:-)?
Ha!, the missus is actually babysitting for a friend today, and I guess we get the favor returned to us next weekend. I got an intense weekend at work(but so far everything is going smooth, knock on wood), so I can't go out but I think we'll manage something.
Somehow, I know that whatever you end up doing, it will be Hub-worthy:-).
I had a good comeback all ready, then you mad me laugh and it was gone... Damn you're witty commentary!
The HSAS vid is gone?!?! That's absolutely unacceptable. I'll go find it again. This time, try to hang onto it, eh? ;-) Kids these days...
OK, here it is. Let me know if it screws up again:

MM. this is weird. When I click both links (this one and the first one) to test them, they worked fine. I don't get it.
Yes, the link is working fine now. It's great to see him so young and hear his version of the song. Here's another one, just proving when you have a GREAT song you can't mess it up.

this is a groovy and trippy piece of psychedlia. i'm sore i missed out on the Beatlemania and did not make it to the wolrd in time to be a flower child! But I thank god i'm the youngest in 8 children so all that great music was not lost in me - they made sure with all those 45s and LPs! :D
