Twitter, 7 things to avoid...

Twitter has seen a real boom in popularity over the past year, but more and more users are becoming disappointed with the service they receive. How can that be happening? Many people aren't seeing the results they want because they're not doing things correctly. Remember, you won't get much of a response if you don't say what you need to correctly. Let's take a look at the seven things you need to avoid in Twitter marketing.

1. Tweeting Uselessly

Don't tweet just because you have the ability to. No one really cares about the tiniest details of your everyday life, unless you're famous. If you're tempted to write about what you had for lunch, think twice about whether or not your readers want to know. Don't waste your followers' time (or yours) by tweeting pointlessly.

2. Avoiding Personalization

Building relationships and connections requires proving that you're a real person, not a marketing robot. That means personalizing your Twitter page and putting something about yourself into it. You need to portray yourself as a real live human if you want to get through to people, instead of being ignored.

3. Following Too Many

Don't bother following people if you're not going to pay attention to what they've got to say. If you follow hundreds or even thousands of people, it can look pretty bad. Follow the kinds of people you'd like to be associated with. It'll help improve your reputation and provide you with the kind of information you can make use of on your own, or retweet to help others.

4. Nothing But Sales

While you're here to sell, doing nothing but selling will irritate people. Use Twitter to offer information that's really useful to your followers, and the sales will come in naturally as people realize that they need whatever it is that you have to offer.

5. Nothing But Announcements

Don't be a one-way tweeter. If you don't do anything other than announce your latest promotion or sale, you'll be ignored pretty quickly. Instead, make sure you have real content that engages the community. Comment on interesting tweets, and retweet things that are of value to your followers.

6. Being Boring

Even if you're trying to say something useful, doing it in an interesting way can be tricky. That's why you need to learn to use compelling language that'll make people want to find out more. Just because they're following you, it doesn't mean people are going to read all your tweets. They need a reason to do so.

7. Being Unresponsive

A successful Twitter campaign requires you to learn what your followers want to see and what they want to buy. Learn what they're likely to respond to and what they don't care for. Read comments to find out what they want and put together a communication style and a stream of content that's based on what your followers really need.

Avoid these Twitter marketing pitfalls to keep on your followers' good side and get some real positive returns.
