Back Pain

I am guilty as charged!  Most people take their backs for granite, that is until something goes wrong! Don't wait to become one of the 80 percent of people who become effected by their back problems!  You can start babying your back today to help prevent problems tomorrow.

Watch Out For Bad Posture

You mother was right when she said to sit up straight and don't slouch! Try to practice good posture at all times!  Keep your back straight, not arched, and your shoulders level.  Don't slump even when you are relaxing.  If you have to stand any for any long lengths of time, try to rest on foot on a stool and shift your weight often.  Wear comfortable shoes with good support and low heels.  Change your positions frequently no matter what you are doing.

Sit Up Straight

Choose a chair that gives your lower back good support.   You can add a small cushion or a rolled-up towel to the small of your back, even while you are driving if you choose.  Try to sit properly with both feet on the floor or on a low stool, and keep your hips and legs at a 90-degree angle.  Keep your chair close enough to your desk so you don't have to lean forward.  If you spend a lot of time sitting, get up and move around and stretch.

Practice Safe Lifting

You need to keep your spine straight.  Either squat, bending your knees, or bend at the hips, not the waist.  Always use your arms and legs to lift and keep the object close to your body.

Enjoy Restful Sleep

If you are somebody who likes to sleep on your back, try placing a pillow under your knees.  For those who like to sleep on their side, you may want to keep your knees bent.

Get Some Exercise

To help keep you back in shape, find a simple exercise program that combines aerobic, flexibility, and strengthing exercises.  Try to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day.  And always remember to check with your doctor before starting an exercise program.

Stop Smoking

Smoking has been linked to many back disorders.  What researchers say is that by smoking, it will make the bones weaker by slowing the production of new bone cells.  Weak bones can cause back pain.

Maintain A Healthy Weight

If you are overweight, lose the extra pounds.  They are putting pressure on your spine.

I also read that womens high heels and something in our foot arches can throw out alignment and cause back problems. Thanks for the reminder on a subject so important to daily living.

I'm one who doesn't give my back a second thought - until I bend wrong or pick something heavy up without the proper posture!

And go see a Chiropractor at least once a month. It makes a difference.
