Stress has become a common part of modern daily life, but how you handle it can greatly impact your life either positively or negatively. Stress is highly related to your physical and emotional health, and long-term stress has links to several chronic illnesses. Reducing and eliminating the impact of stress on your life can have long-lasting benefits. Here are a few tips you may find helpful.

1) Make Sure You're Getting the Right Amount of Sleep

Even mild sleep deprivation can leave a person feeling anxious, tired, and stressed on a daily basis. While the amount of sleep an adult needs varies somewhat from individual to individual, it usually ranges between 7-9 hours a night. A lot of people are not getting that much due to their jobs and other obligations. It's important to take a look at your overall schedule to see if this may be an issue to you and find ways to address it.

2) Make Time for Exercise

Moderate exercising releases endorphins into your body, which can help in relieving stress and boost your mood. Keeping your body in good shape will help reduce health-related stress in your life. Focused exercises like yoga and deep breathing can teach you how to have greater control over how your body physically reacts to stress.

3) Eat as Healthy as You Can

I'm not saying give up everything that tastes good, which I think is a little overboard and unrealistic for most people. Be willing to try new things however, and you may find healthy recipes that not only taste good but are easy to prepare.

4) Read Nonfiction Books on a Regular Basis

A lot of frustrations in life come from a lack of information. If money has been a stress point in your life, read financial books. The same goes with relationships, attitude, leadership, careers, parenting, or any other aspect in your life you'd like to improve. You still have the ability to make your own decisions, but some books will just open up good ideas and give you more options.

5) Get Rid of Clutter in Your Home

Ever have one of those "Where are my keys?" moments at the worst time possible? Taking some time to sell or donate things that you never use or are in the way will simplify your life in a good way and save you a lot of hassles. Keep a trash can with a shedder near your front door to get rid of junk mail before it migrates to other areas of the house.

6) Set Your Priorities in Life and Stick With Them

It's sometimes easy to get caught up in relatively little things in life to the point they seem bigger. The sad thing is it's often a tragic event that wakes people from this mode of thinking, sometimes when it's too late to do anything about situations from a physical standpoint. Your time is the most valuable thing you have, and remember not to take the people you care about the most for granted.

7) Take the Time to Help Someone Else

Sometimes all it takes is helping someone who is in worse shape than you are to put your life in perspective. There are a lot of people out there who need help, and it doesn't always have to involve money. Local churches or organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels are a good place to start for opportunities.

Good luck and best wishes to you!
