One of the most expensive things in life is marriage and your subsequent honeymoon. Here are some ideas to help you save some money on your honeymoon travel.

1. Honeymoon registry

Instead of getting gifts that you will eventually give to someone else, how about getting some money for your honeymoon instead. There are honeymoon registries that allow your guests to contribute money toward your honeymoon as a wedding gift. You can select elements of your honeymoon such as meals, hotel nights, airfare and your guests can purchase increments of these items as wedding gifts. For a sample of what a honeymoon registry looks like you can view this sample honeymoon registry from Mariott hotels.

2. Booking online, use coupon codes

If you plan to book your trip online, make sure you check for coupons or promotional codes to increase your discount. Many online travel booking websites such as Expedia and Travelocity promote travel coupons and you just need to find them to save you from $50 to $200 off your travel. By searching Expedia coupons or Travelocity coupons one can save substantially. IF you plan on hotel booking, look for a hotel coupon code to save money on lodging. The point here is: most online travel sites offer promotional codes and if you don't search for them, you are losing out on money.

3. Travel to destinations in the offseason

Here's a novel idea: push your wedding to near January. January usually has the lowest prices of the season due to people being broke after the holidays. This means less people travel and the airlines and hotels will give you the best rates for honeymoon. If you plan to marry near Thanksgiving, you may be paying twice as much... ouch. You can always use the excuse during Christmas and Thanksgiving time that you need to spend time with family. If you don't have a choice and your woman has you bound, you can always use farecast to see when is the cheapest time to fly. Farecast predicts what airline prices will be for the period that you want to travel in. Also remember that are cheaper for flights and hotels than weekends.

5. Consider a cruise

Cruises are usually all inclusive with room and food. They are much cheaper than booking a vacation package, so you can tell her you want to be unique and book a cruise. You can say something like "Remember how romantic the movie Titanic was?" Of course, focus on the romantic aspect of the movie, not the part where everybody dies :).

4. Use travel auction sites

Of course one of the best known sites is priceline.com where you can name your own price. One of my favorites is skyauction.com where you can really get amazing deals. For example as I look at this page now, I can see "$139 Coast to Coast Sale; NYC to/from LA or San Francisco" and this is not one of the auction items, it's actually a trip that can be purchased immediately.

6. Consider the exchange rate

If you plan to travel to a foreign location, consider what the current exchange rate will be. If you travel to Japan, it's going to cost you much more for food than if you travel to Mexico. Know and plan your budget so you won't get credit card shock at the end of the month.

7. Plan ahead, book package deals

The more you plan ahead, the better rates you will have for flights and hotel accommodations. In addition, if you book vacation packages, it will be much more cheaper than if you book them separately.

Remember the true purpose of your marriage

Finally remember that one of the reasons that many couples fight and end up splitting apart is because offinances. Unless you plan to marry a golddigger, wherever you decide to go it will be memorable honeymoon because of who you are and not because of how much you spend.
