70s Songs - 1979 Most Popular Songs

1979 was the year of disco. Out of the top ten best-selling songs of 1979, seven of the hit songs were disco songs. Some of them have become song classics.

Everyone knows how to do the YMCA dance. It seems that most of us have some weird inclination to sing along to Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive, even if we hate the disco anthem. Some people would argue that eight of the top ten songs of 1979 were disco. They claim that Rod Stewart's huge hit, "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" is a disco song. I beg to disagree. Maybe it was influenced by the disco rage, but it is not disco.

The number one song of 1979 was decidedly not disco, however. The Knack had the song of the year in 1979 with "My Sharona". People were proclaiming that The Knack was the next big thing in music. Sadly, they were mistaken. The Knack disappeared into obscurity almost as quickly as they appeared.

I have scoured the internet trying to find a video of the classic hit by the Village People. Believe it or not, I couldn't find YMCA. I found tons of people dancing to YMCA, but none of the Village People themselves. So, please excuse me for substituting The Chipmunks YMCA video clip instead. (But aren't those chipmunks adorable?)
