Government officials have suggested that every home in the United States should be prepared for an emergency or disaster. This statement could be taken many different ways. To prepare your home for a time of crisis, you need a 72 hour emergency kit for every member of your home and enough emergency food storage for at the very least 3 months.

72 hour kits are designed to keep a person alive for 3 days after a disaster. You might be asking, why 3 days? Well, that is about how long it takes for disaster relief to enter an area that has received considerable damage. These kits should be well thoughout and planned so you have the necessary supplies to keep you alive and breathing.

So, what does a person need in a 72 hour survival kit? Here is a basic list that can be added to if you see fit.

  • Enough food for 3 days
  • Enough water for 3 days
  • Poncho
  • Flashlight with batteries
  • Emergency blanket
  • First Aid Kit
  • Hand and body warmers
  • Whistle
  • Matches
  • Toilet Paper
  • Duct Tape
  • Backpack
  • Reflector
  • Pliers or small tool kit
  • Candles
  • Crank radio
  • Tube tent
  • Wet naps
  • Long sleeved clothes
  • Short sleeved clothes

Like I said above, this just a list of staples that are needed for survival. You can add as much as you want to this list.
