7 Cold Sore Treatment Methods
59Whether or not you truly need to use any kind of cold sore treatment is up to you. The reason for this is because cold sores generally heal on their own in 7 to 10 days. However, those 7 days drag on forever and can be quite embarrassing. Here are 7 cold sore treatments to help you minimize the pain and discomfort you are experiencing.
1. Acyclovir
There are different forms of acyclovir, such as the over-the-counter Zovirax cold sore cream. If you are unsure what kind is best, seek a physician's advice. You want to apply this cream immediately after you begin to notice symptoms and continue treatment 5 times a day for 5 days.
2. Apply cold
One of the most basic yet efficient home remedies for reducing the pain and itching is applying something cold on the sore. Placing an ice pack or a cold towel over the cold sore will reduce the discomfort momentarily.
3. Clean hands
You want to wash your hands as much as possible. After any contact with the cold sore, you should thoroughly wash your hands. This is especially relevant for after doing any cold sore treatment and applying medication.
4. Tea bag
Surprisingly, applying a tea bag over the cold sore can be an extremely effective method. The reason for this is because there is an ingredient called tannic acid that acts as an antiviral agent. It is potent and is effective with treating cold sores.
5. Avoid touching other body parts
After coming in contact with your cold sore, try not to touch other parts of your body as best as you can. There are some types of cold sores that are highly contagious and can spread to other areas of the body. If this is the case, you want to go to the doctor and get treatment.
6. Painkillers
Although they will not necessarily treat the cold sore, painkillers can be great for taking away any kind of pain and discomfort you are feeling. Taking aspirin, paracetamol, or an ibuprofen will get the job done.
7. Rest
It is vital that you get as much rest as possible. There is no denying the fact that your bodies heal on their own if we take care of it. Therefore, get plenty of rest and stay hydrated. This will speed up the process of recovery.
Cold sore treatment is not absolutely necessary unless you begin to notice it spreading. But it can become quite painful and discomforting without any treatment whatsoever. Try some of the methods listed above and you should be able to eliminate a great deal of the itching and pain.
