The 1980s saw the formation of New Wave, which evolved from Punk rock of the 70s. Hard rock was also making a comeback during the 80s after disco started dying out. Country music was also seeing a rebound in 1980. 1980 music hadn't yet seen these influences enough to make a dent in the hit songs of the year. 1980 music was loaded with pop song hits.
Two huge bands broke up in 1980, The Eagles and Led Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin's drummer John Bonham dies in an accidental death due to drinking too much alcohol. This prompted the legendary band to call it quits.
Musicians Who Died in 1980
John Lennon is murdered outside his apartment by Mark David Chapman. At the time, John Lennon's song Starting Over was one of the Top 10 Singles in the USA.
Bon Scott of AC/DC dies from alcohol poisoning.
