Non-essential gear are luxuries that many experts recommend that you remove from your checklist for a backpacking trip. There's nothing wrong about taking non-essentials in such a trip, just don't take all of them and if you have some stuff that have the same function, take only one unless you really need a spare. If possible use gear that has multiple functions.

In base camping, weight is not a big issue and people tend to carry a lot stuff from home. For example, instead of taking camping sleeping gear, some like to use mattresses intended for their house guests, normal pillows and duvet.

My Favorite Non-Essential Gear

Camping Chair

A camping chair is one of the best non-essential to have on a camping trip. People use it to relax, eat, cook, watch the stars, read and more. The folding camping chair is a favorite among base campers because they can be used on many occasions other than camping e.g. fishing.

Camping Pillow

For some people, the pillow is an essential gear because they can't sleep without them. They only weigh a few ounces anyway and most pack very small. Some simply use their stuff sack packed with clothing as a pillow.

Pop Up Shelter

Camping Lantern

Illumination is one of the essentials for surviving the outdoors but if you already have a flashlight or headlamp (much more useful) then a camping lantern becomes a luxury item. These are great for reading, socializing, cooking and waking up in the early morning.

Camping Toilet

Most campgrounds have toilet facilities but sometimes when nature comes calling in the middle of the night and the bathroom is far away, the camping toilet may prove to be useful.

Camping Shower

It can get sweaty and sticky at camp especially during the summer. A quick shower can do a lot to make you feel clean and fresh which in turn makes you feel better.

Privacy Shelter

You can set up a pop-up shelter in less than 3 seconds. It's a small shelter that's big enough to stand in and can be used to shower or change in private. You can even use it as a bathroom.

Barbeque Grill

You can only do so much with a camp stove. With a barbeque grill the food can be so much better. Some people like to use one of those disposable instant grill because they're very convenient. Barbeque wings anyone?

Outback Oven

The aroma of freshly-baked bread sounds good? The Outback Oven from Backpacker's Pantry allows you to bake anything you can bake at home in the outdoors. Bread, biscuits, cinnamon rolls and croissants are just some of the things people love to bake with this oven in the outdoors. The application is almost endless.

Ice Cream Ball

The Play and Freeze Ice Cream Maker lets you play with it as makes great tasting ice cream. Fill one end with ice and rock salt and the other end with ice cream mix and then shake it, pass it around, throw it around  or kick it against the wall or whatever for 15 minutes or so and you'll have ice cream.
