95 percent of all e-mail sent in 2007 was spam
64
The amount of spam in e-mail boxes have increased dramatically in seven years from 5 percent in 2001 to 70 percent in 2004 and now a staggering 95 percent of all e-mails are spam.
The spammers have won it seems despite the government’s Can-Spam Act. Barracuda Networks does a spam report every year and this year it analyzed more than 1 billion e-mail messages that was sent to its 50,000 customers worldwide. The results showed that 90 to 95 percent of all e-mails were spam.
The poll showed that 50 percent of users received five or less spam e-mails a day, while 65 percent received less than 10 spam messages each day and 13 percent received at least 50 spam messages every day.
The survey also found the following results: * Spam is becoming more sophisticated. Barracuda Networks found "that the majority of spam e-mails in 2007 utilized identity obfuscation techniques"; * Spammers also increased the usage of attachments, such as PDF files and other file formats in 2007. * 57 percent of respondents view spam e-mail as the worst form of junk advertising, close to double the 31 percent that cited postal junk mail. Only 12 percent chose telemarketing; Another Barracuda survey of 261 business professionals showed we are more prone to give away telephone numbers than e-mail addresses because of spam e-mail problems.
How to tackle this spam problem? Since there are no concrete government rules for spam as of yet, we will see more of the same and will reach almost 99 percent.
I receive about 100 spam messages, but thanks to Gmail and Thunderbird (it is many times better than Microsoft Outlook), I seldom see any of the spam messages, it goes directly to junk mail box and I delete all of them with a single click every day.

Thanks Gabriella, use Gmail it is very effective tool, and uses social concept in preventing spam, if one reports it, Gmail uses for everyone and marks that e-mail in the future as spam. So, it is a great tool. But sad to see these spammers are wasting the internet resources.
Ohmigod that is just pathetic!!! Spamming must be a 24/7 job for some people!!
Yes, they should find some other job than sending this, what a waste of life, they will be seeing God and will say, yes I send Spam :)
Your comments and Spam photo are very appropriate. I have another email address for business and i probably 10 to 15 Spams a day This is gmail.
As you say one tick each and then gone with a flick of a finger.
Great hub thank you
Thanks MrMarmalade, glad to see it is working great with Gmail. Yahoo and Hotmail also have improved but Gmail has so many features, they are number one in this.
CGull! I vouch that that 95% junk has found it's way into my e-mail box.You should check out the 'solution' in Wajay 47's HUB 'Spam and Me' (if you have a couple of minutes for fun)
Great HUB
regards Zsuzsy
Thanks Zsuzy Bee, I will check out the hub for sure. Cheers.
95%!! Fascinating and appalling statistics!! For me, Gmail blocks 100%.....So far so good;)
For me 1 or 2 spam escapes, but no problems, I just hit the spam button, will avoid them in the future :)
