I have been monitoring the recalls VERY closely since this murderous ramage of neglect and poisoning started. My cat has been on 9-lives and since I have seen in several areas that 9-lives is NOT on the recall list I have been feeding him this. He is now very ill and is in the vet hospital LOOK at your food. Please respond immediatley if you care for your customers and their family memebers!
my cat died from kidney and liver failure she went from health to death in a very short time the vet said it looked like poison she was eating 9lives cat food ocean whitefish dinner i have one can left can i send anywhere for testing nobc4l15b2dwd best by nov 15 07 no on can jnparmelee

jnparmelee,
I am so sorry for not getting back to you sooner. You need to speak with someone atFor more information about Maltzman Foreman PA please visit http://www.mflegal.com/
My 10-year-old cat died in a very horrific manner in May. Neither of the foods he was eating was on the recall list (9 Lives canned food and Meow Mix-dry) but I am convinced he was a victim of poison pet food. I don't care about financial compensation but I would like to see these pet food companies that allowed poison pet food to go out on the market held responsible for the heartbreak caused to many pet owners.
Glenda,
You have expressed the feelings of thousands of people. It is NOT about the money it is all about the Quality!
Susan
My lil boy Romeo sweetest guy ever just died from Kidney failure! I was feeling so guilty until I started googling the recall. I couldn't find 9lives or Purina on the lists. Also 3 months ago after Romeo ate chunky bites soft 9lives cat food from Safeway he got extremely sick. However, I believe 9 lives was left off the recall list. Three months ago was Romeo got sick and just recently his kidneys finally failed. Now I'm surfing though all these sites & finding others who feel the same way & have also lost their best friends. Does anyone know about 9lives chunky soft food in 2007? Safeway has now removed all nine lives products from their shelves hoping no one will notice! Does anyone have advice on how to take action against these companies? A sad goodbye to all are best friends!Dave
On Fri Aug 24, I bought a small bag of 9-Lives Growing Years for cats 0-3 years - I fed a small amount to my young male cat. He threw it up Friday night & was still sick Sat - today, he has no appetite, just drinking a little water. Since he ate only a small amount, hopefully there won't be a continuing problem but we visit the vet tomorrow. I was searching internet to see if anyone else had problems with Dry 9-Lives cat food. Best used by date is Dec 4, 2008 and the mfg code is TP7F06091725 - it says Made in USA.
Also - I fed some of this to a stray cat that comes by for meals - I noticed it had thrown up, too. That cat ate more than my cat did. I'll have to take it to the Humane Society shelter now
I normally buy Meow Mix Indoor Formula for my cats (14 and 15 years old), but haven't seen any of the green cornered bags on the shelves since the May recalls. This is the Indoor Formula, since both cats were adopted neutered and declawed on front paws they are strictly indoor cats.
They are now vomitting, acting lethargic and semi-antisocial and I need to help them get to the box to urinate by pushing down and massaging their bellies until they are in their normal squatting position.
They are silent and do not pure at all. They seek warm corners and solitude. One under the wall's AC unit the other one of my older pillows or a used towel.
A kitten I just adopted got the runs eating this product, but I've managed to get her on her on home made kitten chow that I got a recipe for and since she has no real habits yet.
My cats grew up on Meow mix and 9 Lives until recently haven't gotten sick like this. Symptoms are as above (Lethargy/thirst/high frequency of urination) and seem to be those of kidney failure-as noted in other articles.
I can't afford a vet visit as I'm a disabled veteran myself and do not work nor have I since 96. These are my only companions and I'm deeply worried about them. The oldest is drinking water five times as often and started taking in tuna water from the can but only twice in last two days.
The middle cat (Nathan) is starting to go through the first set of symptoms the elder cat (Jake) went through.
I've been loyal to these brands and when I discovered that "animal digest" listed as an ingredient is nothing more than animal droppings/manure I was not only shocked, but very angered and disappointed their dry food mixes. Above even the current poisons and melanine-gluten recall problems.
Cats are carnivores, but they've always prefered these brands even over tuna from the can unless it's mixed in for the crunch, same with chicken chunks. I only feed them the human canned foods occassionally as a special treat and they get very frisky and loving after.
Now they won't sleep with me and seek solacea alone and separately. The kitten(pip) is distraught as she was at first received with great interest and joy by both males who even played with her after determining she wasn't another male and a threat. Now they lay there, Jake under the warm part of the AC on a nest of paper and cardboard where the heat is higher and another in a box with towels in it that normally are used to transport them and for the three cats to sleep in. I bought 9 Lives Egg and Tuna flavor at a Dollar Store this month due to low funds to keep the cats fed. The front of the bag doesn't quite match the add their site though- change in marketing and design? Or faked/repackaged tainted cat foods?
I'll be doing what the online vet suggests and feeding them light soup liquids and tidbits of protein I'd eat. If they'll eat at all (tuna and chicken in cans mixed with rice carrots and some greens mashed together), but they refuse even that.
I fear that the food I've entrusted so long may end up killing my only companions that saw me through the dificult times of learning to walk again after I broke my neck in 94 and left the navy in 96 after I became mobile again after the neck surgery.
They've always been there for me when I've been sick and feeling ill or suffering a migraine and one (the oldest) pawed at my chest (yes I'm male) for several weeks and I discovered a lump that I wouldn't have noticed until it'd grown much larger and maybe too late for my VA doctors to treat- except radically.
They are in tune to me and my life and now I feel I must do the same for them. How can you help me with this product's possible side effects and find out what's really occuring here? If I lose the cats the local vet already agreed to do the autopsy for free and check for kidney damage.
If that proves the case, I'll be forced to go from a loyal customer to one who''ll go for the jugular. They were in prime health until I bought this last bag of dry cat food last week and losing them would mean more than losing my breast to cancer to me.
With all my problems, me and my cats didn't need this surprise. Their vomit is either yellow like the cat food or foamy white (no hairballs in a week) they are lethargic and almost hiding from each other as well as me.
They are off this brand of food for now and I've seen the supposed "safe" list of foods on your site and on others. The main sites for 9 Lives and Meow Mix have zero content on this recall and it should be a PRIME link on their front pages.
These are two of the biggest suppliers in the US, so one must assume they're hiding for now behind their lobby lackies and lawyers. I'm sure hoping that the suits bypass them and hit their competition.
What's happened to all the recalled food? Was it reprocessed and packed anew using the old adage- "The solution to the problem is dilution!" meaning they mixed it right back into a new batch of food to spread out the poisons into lower proportions or did they burn/bury it? I'm sure we'll never know.
Dick Evans, speaking for his two companions Jake and Nathan (and the healthy kitten Pip)
I got two kittens on Sunday and began feeding them the 9Lives Growing Years brand food. By Tuesday, one had diarrhea and yesterday, the other developed it too. I initially thought it might be an adjustment to only solid food and no mother's milk, but after reading this blog, I'm scared that it's the food that's making them sick. :-( After reading this this morning, I've taken the food away but What do I do now?
Melissa,
I've had so many people report the 9Lives brand pet food is killing their cat. These people have formed a Class Action against the company for making their kitties sick and killing them.
You need to switch to a brand of cat food which does not include corn, wheat, or soy. That will be your first saving grace. Read through some of the cat food reviews and look for a 10/10 score. http://hubpages.com/hub/Cat_Food_Review
Dick Evens,
I have really enjoyed reading your post. I am sorry about your companions and I pray they are doing better. You are a smart man and a good friend to those guys, keep me posted on their health. I think you should visit this link for answers to some of your questions. info@mflegal.com
Susan
I've sent them an email from their website already, thanks.
Jake is being hand fed and taking in tidbits of safe wet food, yogurt, tuna water and sometimes nibbling at the safe(? Which ones really are ?) cat food in his dish. Nathan is more mobile and hasn't lost weight like Jake did. (Jake lost over 10 lbs and Nathan like 4-5) But I put it to Jake having eaten the cat food (9 Lives Urinary Tract Health (dry) Cat Food made in Canada (Note there are two versions One made in US for regular stores and one made in Canada for Dollar and bargain stores- bags and labeling are slightly different making me think that recalled Del Monte foods (probably quietly since they never said they were doing so and the green cornered bags disappeared since last spring and only now are reappearing in bargain stores...)
Free trade from Canada probably means that Del Monte's Canada pet food production would use more imports from China (they are on the Vancouver side of the continent I believe).
What happened to all that american recalled dry and wet food? Did it get sent somewhere tested and then treated like a Government problem? That's "The Solution to the problem is Dilution" meaning they take bad food and mix it with more good food and thus don't lose any profits as it's now "Safer" and under the radar and reblended and repackaged.
If they did this I'd be very pissed off.
BTW Tuna water + yogurt helped Jake and Nathan. The yogurt to relign their intestinal tract so they could digest food again. The tuna water for liquids and suspended solids and vitamins. I then fed a finger full at a time five times a day to the cats of safe canned wet cat food that had no glutens in it.
With my limited income (well well under the poverty level, like under 1/3 mark of what's a single male's mark. Figure it out if you wish.)
I've lost sleep and been very stressed over the last two weeks caring for Jake and then Nathan.
The Kitten Pip is health and starting on more solid foods and seems to want to sneak Jake's and Nathan's newer safe food.
Dick Evans
Hello Everyone its Dave again. I lost my Romeo to 9 lives starting in May 07 when he ate the rat poisoned 9 lives from safeway up until I lost him a month ago from Kidney failure. Anyone who have the sympton Dick mentioned has no way to save there pet unless they rush there cat to the vet for IV & fluids to counter act the poison going through there bodies. I found this out the hard way!
Don't fall for soup diets & all that jazz!
You want your cat to Live go to the vet! As far as the 9 lives killers go they have no ballz & left there cat food chunky chicken & other products on the shelves at safeway, wallmart & hundreds of other stores months after the first recalls.
I want to be part of the class action lawsuit but I live in Vancouver Canada what can I do?
I've contacted PEDA & I'm already on there call list & they suggested me creating my own army & starting my own campaine giving me there local Vancouver call list. I will not forget Romeo & the 1000s of others who have lost there loving pets to the fools (9lives) I'm very hapy to hear the FDA Head honcho in China was fitingly Executed for taking bribes & letting this rat poisoned wheat glucon get mixed up into are cats & Dogs food in Canada & the Us. Its unfortunite he was only killed & not tortured but 9 lives has got away scott free. Blaming everything on China & not taking responsibility! They also didn't fully cooperate with the VOLENTARY Recall & left products like the chunky chicken cat food left on there shelves months after the first recalls from Iams.
Please excuse my anger & disgust with 9 lives & there lack of action.. Dave
Dave,
I am not sure if you can join a Class Action against this company or not. You might want to do some checking since the product is manufactured in the States it may be that you may join.
I am mad, too!
Susan
Well I thought the two cats were in the clear. Jake's fully recovered and Pip never got sick (separate diets). Nathan had recovered since I last posted and due to missing teeth he was ordered to get on a softer food diet. I checked all the cans for ingredients listed here and settled on the Marsh's in store brand as main ingredient was whitefish and chicken the second. No glutens, corns, rices or fillers seemed to be on the ingredients either. But D3 was listed, but not which amount.
Nathan, within 30 minutes of eating (separate from other two cats so he could eat in peace and get full on his own) he ran to the bathtub and vomited and had diahrea at the same time. He never recovered after that and lost nearly 12lbs after.
When I saw his eyes, and his left jaws were grey and his breath smelled of death all I could do was make him comfortable. I'm on very limited income and disabled so I can't get to a vet. The local vet demands pay on the spot to treat any pets with possible renal failure now. She and her partners have been inundated with D3 and the Wheat Gluten cases since 2005 aparently, but in last six months nearly 200 cases or more.
That's only from people who can pay or who can get on their credit system. I don't qualify at either.
He died last night at 230 am (9/11) crawling up from his heating pad (his temp was well below normal last two days) to wake me one last time as he sprawled/fell down on my chest I woke and he put a paw on my face and the light faded from his eyes and he death rattled and his legs spasmed.
I tried to resuscitate him, but I noticed his jaw was rotting where the grey parts were. The right side even after he died was still pinkish, but fading.
First he survives the 9 Lives and regains his health and spunk- keeping his weight steady. Then a cat food I found out that wasn't recalled because it's under the store label and is really made by Menu foods and should have been pulled wasn't.
Burying him today was a task and half due to my disability and due to the drought here this summer. Took me hours. I buried him with his towel, some catnip and to make sure as he returns to nature that no dog digs him up I covered his box with red pepper and carpet fresh too.
I planted two acorns with him too. Maybe a tree will grow from his grave one day.
I tried contacting the class action suit folks, but nothing has occured and I've received no notice that they received the email or form I filled out on their website.
The 9 Lives that goes to budget stores and is the likely culprit was made/bagged in canada.
The american version looks slightly different in its packaging too and is supposedly safe according to Del Monte. They say nothing to me when I queried about the Canadian bagged product though. Just that they only talked and knew about the American product. Even though the Canadian version is made specifically for the cheaper and bargain stores like "Dollar General, safeway , bargain general etc. (I've gone in and checked. The UPC's and manufacturing locations of the exact same product are different than in regular supermarkets as are production locations. Bargain = Canadian produced regular US produced, but not guaranteed as with free trade act the food can be imported from Mexico and canada and bagged in US and then called made in USA too, now.
Going to make these lawsuits really twisted and hard to pin down the culprits.
Also how are we to know that the "Voluntarily" recalled pet foods were disposed of properly and not repackaged and sold elsewhere or simply subjected to the old adage " The solution to the problem is dilution" that is remixing the bad product with newer cleaner product until the percentages of bad stuff in it was at a more acceptable level to the companies thus they'd still sell the bad stuff, but mixed with good and look like they cared.
That may be paranoid of me, but I believe these corporations aren't above this. They've already been lying to us about the ingredients for years already, haven't they?
Dick Evans, who just lost Nathan and now is mentally numb and overly protective of Jake and Pip
Dick,
I am so sorry. Listen up, folks! Are you thinking of feeding 9Lives pet foods? You'd better read Dick's post.
Susaan
Both Marsh's and Menu Foods called me in the last 24 hours and are supposedly running a background/production test and checking where it was made and how. They were not happy that i sent a portion of the uneaten catfoods to a local university for testing to check for biologicals and chemicals (via gas spectral chromatography) I'm lucky that I have an old college friend who's a professor of chemistry there now and can assign the job to one of his TA's to do as a side project and cost me nothing.
Marshes said that mine was the first complaint of that particular brand and I said if it's made by Mars or Menu food, it likely shouldn't have been on the shelves in the first place. As it's mostly made of seafood (and leftover seafood parts- i.e. shrimp which means shells, heads and tails vs entire shrimp, unless it's shrimp that was out too long and unfit for human consumption, that is) along with a long list of ingredients I'd expect on a PAINT CAN not in cat foot.
What the hell is Titanium Dioxide doing in pet food? That's a paint whitener, damn it.
Sorry, Susan I'm still pissed off. I'll try to keep it PG.
Fist the 9 Lives/Del Monte Canadian made bargain Tuna and Egg Indoor (green corner) formula nearly kills Jake and then Nathan last month, but for my fast action and hand care got them healthy again.
Then due to Nathan's losing teeth ( a problem with his breed) I had to get him off the homemade recipe and onto a canned food. I didn't let him eat for a day to make him hungrier and less likely to turn his nose up at the food and then served him half the can of the Mashes Brand Seafood Soft Catfood. Half hour later...it's as I described above.
Between the two foods I think the problem got agravated, even though Nathan didn't lose any weight during the first episode since I took the food away from the cats before he got more than one or two mouthfuls (about time I noticed Jake was really ill and acting funny) and gave them both the activated charcoal in case of poisoning and to help them clear their systems.
Then I did the yogurt and home made food routine until they were on their feet and acting normal again.
Jake recovered and is putting on weight. The Kitten is on it's own diet and sneaking Jake's food occassionally when he lets Pip do so. Little poop machine still. But healthy and ballistic around the house...no toes are safe, or phone cables or computer cables. Not even tender body parts when you're soaking in bathtub. He sees Jake lounging next to my head in the hot water and decides she's okay with the water and suddenly I got sharp claws where I least expect it.
You can stop laughing now...please...but if I can train her- free vasectomies to anyone who wants one. Cheap rental on bathtub with catnip laced hotwater too...you bring your own beer and ice for after... ;P
I miss Nathan. Menu foods wanted me to send ALL the cans of cat food to them along with the pet too...yeah Dig up my cat, send it to strangers who are known to use pets in their pet food too? Sure... Send them the only proof I have? Right...
I've kept the 9 Lives and Marshes Brand Catfood too (seafood variety).
I suggest yall Google Marshes Supermarkets and check the chains they own (nearly 200 stores in various names, some are like 7-11's too) and what they sell this particular cat food (canned wet seafood with whitefish as main ingredient) ) and see what other labels this product is sold under. IF yall want the UPC and made by codes I'll provide them for both the 9 Lives and the Menu Foods seafood feast made for instore labels also.
Lastly the sixth of a can I put in freezer to save dehydrated even though it was in a ziplock and started growing a black mold (in a rectangle shape) with a white blue border and also white fuzzy round molds with grey spots between them. I can see hairs of unidentified nature in the stuff now that it's dried out too and pulled apart.
What in the hell are they trying to pass off as good for our pets these days?
Link to lawsuit vs 9 Lives doesn't work anymore Susan.
I'm afraid that all the separate lawsuits will be rolled into one (to save manufacturer's money and make more money for the lawyers involved) class action and it'll be years before it's resolved. But then the pain will still be there for those of us who've lost pets to bad food already.
Dick,
I wish you would write articles for Hubpages you are so interesting. The link for 9Lives Lawsuit is http://hubpages.com/hub/9Lives_
I asked this on another hub page, but now that I found this page (so many) I have a question about the 9 Lives Tuna. What kind of Tuna do they use and where do they get it. Mercury & PCBs could not be good for cats or dogs. Now after reading these posts it seems I may not use it any more. Sad--this seemed to be an ok product. My cat refuses all 9 Lives foods except for the Tuna. Any info is appreciated. I also will try the legal link. Thanks

Sorry about the double post--
River,
I'm afraid I'm going to have to let my readers answer your question about the source of 9Lives tuna. I don't have that answer but I will keep my ears and eyes open to the answer for your question.
Susan
I HAVE HAD CATS THROUGHT MY ENTIRE LIFE. I HAVE BEEN USING FRISKIES CAT FOOD BRAND FOR YEARS, AND YEARS. JUST LAST WEEK I PURCHASED 9 LIVES. I WAS CONCERNED BECAUSE I HAD DIFFICULTY OPENING THE CANS. THEN, MY HUSBAND ENDED UP IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM AT A LOCAL HOPSITAL, HAVING TO GET 12 STITCHES. THIS WAS CAUSED BY AN ACCIDENT THAT OCCURED IN THE PROCESS OF OPENING A 9-LIVES CAT FOOD CAN.WHY DOES IT SEEM THAT YOUR CANS ARE MADE OF MUCH STRONGER METAL?AT THIS TIME I CANNOT FORESEE BUYING WITH 9-LIVES BRAND, DO TO THE WAY THAT YOU MAKE THE CANS.I JUST WANTED TO SEND YOU THIS COMMENT IN HOPES THAT YOU MIGHT START USING A LESS DANGEROUS METAL MATERIAL TO PRODUCE 9 - LIVES CANS.THANK YOU.
Laurie,
You should contact the company itself to post your complaints. Their contact information is listed at the top of this page.
Happy Holidays,
Susan
Hi, an Saturday June 26-2009 I bought 4 cans of tuna/egg, and 4 cans of 9lives ch lamb& rice, I have not opened the cans and they smell awful they have a hole and now worms are coming out of it I called many times and nobody was able to answered, today it is closed for the holidays, and now what should I do? if I go to the supermarket they are going to replace the cans, and benefit from the claim .

I fully agree with Kristina. I just lost a Fennec Fox, she was 5 and had never ever been sick before. She was fed often 9lives chicken in gravy. She started to eat less and less early in early April, started having a horrible black diarrea and finally died of kidneys failure last weekend. We spent $1500 at the vets, they tried everything to save her!!! I miss her terribly and I am convinced 9lives is the culprit (from the symptoms, testionies and what I read). I am outraged!
