A Big Fat Paycheck Isn't Financial Freedom

If you think that a big fat paycheck is freedom you have been lied to. I recall just a few years ago when my wife was earning a six-figure income in corporate america. Guess what, I barely saw her and when I did she was so tired, she wasn't that much fun to be around most of the time. She was on the road as much as 14 days a month and even got stuck in Omaha, Nebraska for 5 days due to a snow storm. Oh yeah, did I mention we had a 4 year old son at the time. Luckily, I worked from home and had a flexible schedule, otherwise my son would have spent most of his time with babysitters.

The money was great, we got to take vacations, go to our favorite restaurants and didn't have a worry at all about money. However, that all came to a crashing hult when my wife lost her job. She'd spent over 7 years within the same industry and guess what, when she lost her job the paychecks quit coming in. We went from having and additional $8 - $10K per month to zero overnight. Talk about a lifestyle change??? Recession is nothing when that happens, that's called DEPRESSION, we lost over half of our monthly income in a New York Minute. Are we any happy with less money. Let me just say I have spent the last year doing real estate, network marketing, marketing, consulting, and music to pay the bills, and I currently don't have a boss.

I thought maybe I was an employee with my real estate firm, but they informed me the other day that I am an independent contractor. So I technically, don't have a job. Am I more free than my wife. Absolutely 110%, you know why? If I lose an income stream, I only lose about 20% of my income and that is easy to replace, I just sell more houses, recruit more people for my home based busienss, or go play more gigs. You see I am not dependent on one income and that is the secret to becoming wealthy or staying wealthy. You have to create multiple streams of income. If you can do that you will never become dependent on others for your paycheck. My wife still wants to go back to the corporate world, and god bless her. That is fine, because now she knows if she loses her job with all of her husbands multiple streams of income, she will be just fine.

Great post John! And, boy, can I relate! I was laid-off after 15 yrs from a "great" corporate job, so I know what you mean about DEPRESSION.

Unlike you wife, I vowed NEVER to go back, and I now have multiple streams of income from home (that's what the "ms" in "ms-independence stands for).

Anyway, I enjoyed your article -- it's always great to connect w/ another like minded person who has their head on straight.

btw... any links to your music? My husband is also a musician!

Hi ms-independence,

Yeah, I wish my wife would get over it. But I completely support whatever she likes to do. As long as we no longer rely on her income and just count it as free chickens than I don't mind. As for my music, you can check me out at www.myspace.com/johnlowerymusic
