How you set up your work space, your office for your home based business, can have a powerful impact on how successful your home based business will be. If you are just starting your business your budget is likely to be tight.
Here are some simple ways to get the most out of your start up money and some important factors to consider which will impact your productivity and thus how well your business succeeds.
Keep your office area private.
Use a spare room or convert the den or a finished basement into your office. You can't be productive if constantly being interrupted.
Schedule your work time so that someone else is home to deal with the kids-remember it's not so much the quantity of time you spend working but how productive that time is. It's better to have 2 hours in the morning and 1 -2 hours in the afternoon or evening doing work that counts than 8 hours with constant distractions. Treat your home based business like it is a job, you have a schedule and have to be there on time.
Time your work so that you are running your business when you are most productive and alert. For most people that's in the morning but many people are at their best at night or even in the very early morning. Another key to productivity is to stop every couple of hours to stretch and walk around a little. This gets your blood circulating and sharpens your ability to concentrate. Drink some juice or tea for a boost.
Equipment- Evaluate what you need now and what you will need.
Think carefully about your home business. What kind of furnishings and equipment do you have on hand already? You can save some money on furnishings this way. For example, your oldest is away at college, now. Why not take the computer desk from his room and use it in the office? You just saved a couple of hundred dollars.
A couple of things you shouldn't skimp on is lighting and your computer. In order to be productive it's very important to have really good lighting as this will affect your mood while working. Use fluorescent bulbs which simulate daylight and make sure the area is painted in light soothing colors.
Your computer should be up to date with a good security software suite. If you are using Windows you already have a good firewall installed and for just a few dollars ( around $30) you can get AVG Pro antivirus and anti spy-ware software. If you are on a really tight budget, AVG 8.5 Antivirus software is available as freeware.
High speed Internet access is also a must have and can be had for about $30 per month. An important note: don't let anyone else (the kids for example) use your computer. This will greatly reduce the chances of getting malware or viruses.
About Office Supplies and Advertising
Paper, Pens and such can be gotten very cheaply at Wal-Mart or Staples. Just be aware of what you are purchasing and only get what you really need. Every penny saved on supplies is money that can be used for promoting your business and making you some money.
If you don't have a desk or chair you like, a really good place to find one is at the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity or Goodwill stores. You can get cheap prices on filing cabinets and storage shelves there as well. Another really cheap way to get shelving is by using milk crates and wide boards. Instant shelves and storage inside the crates as well.
Your home based business is going to need to advertise at some point. Depending upon what type you chose certain supplies will be needed such as flier stock or CD mailers. Think ahead as you plan your ad campaign and order these online to save money. A search on Google will find several sites where discount supplies can be ordered.
Office Software and Other Equipment
Before you buy a lot of expensive software, research open source alternatives. Sourceforge and the GNU project have developed some really great alternatives and they are freeware. I especially like Open Office Suite, an alternative to Microsoft Office and Scribus for desk top publishing.
Are you anticipating using snail mail a lot? If so it would benefit you to get a postage meter or to use the Post Offices online site for getting postage stamps that you can print using your printer.
The last item I want you to consider is your printer. A good investment would be to upgrade it to a multi-use laser jet model with a scanner and paper feed. Why? Because it will save you money on printing, sending faxes and toner. Laser jet printers will print many thousands of pages before the need a new ink cartridge.
Finally all the arranging and setting up equipment is done and you're ready. Your office is just how you wanted it to be and all I can say is may your Home Based business thrive.
