My Great Grandmother was a Cherokee Indian. Her name was Almeda Gabbard. I never met her but my father told me many stories about her life. She was very devoted to God. She prayed on a hillside between two large pine trees everyday.
When my father was 12 years old, she asked him to mark the spot where she prayed. Dad told her that he would find a special stone for her. He walked up a creek bed and looked for hours but couldn't find a stone that he was satisfied with.
Suddenly a storm came up and dad went running up the creek bed in a cold hard rain. He remembered that his grandmother told him, "When life is a storm, Jesus will shelter you." He found a small cave and climbed in it to get out of the storm. There in the cave, he found the perfect stone. It was oval and very smooth.
When the storm let up, dad climbed up the hillside to a railroad track. He found a rail spike on the ground, sat and carved a cross on the rock. It took him quite a while. He showed the stone to his grandmother and with a tear in her eye, she told him that it was perfect.
Dad laid the stone between her deep knee prints on the hill.
My great grandmother, not long before she died, told my father about the future.
She told him that he would be a soldier in a great war. (He was in WW II in Patton's 3rd. Army)
She told him that his first born son would be in wars... very strange wars. (My oldest brother...dad's firstborn son was in Vietnam and Desert Storm)
She prayed for five generations of children and grandchildren. She didn't pray for the sixth generation because they would all be here with Jesus and have peace. My grandchildren are the fifth generation.
She adored my father and told him that his life would be hard but many people would love him. My dad never met a stranger. His life was hard but he would be the first to tell you that it was worth it. He loved life and loved people.
Every time he told me stories of my Great Grandmother, a tear was sure to fall from his eyes. To this day, my family walks in the blessings of her prayers. A woman of amazing faith.
A Cherokee woman...I wish I could have met her. Sometimes when I see a Turtle Dove fly from a pine tree....I feel her smile.
There is some great reading about Native Americans at: http://hubpages.com/_nmh5vmvvvp8l/hub/LET-OUR-PEOPLE-GO

Very fascinating. I love stories like this.
Oh, Tom, I LOVED it! You have quite a rich heritage to boast about!
What a great story, Tom ! She sounds like a wonderful woman! It's a shame you never got to know her, but isn't it nice that you were at least given the story so that you could hand it down. :)
I think I read faster than you, KCC! :-)
Wonderful Tom! A woman who had God's ear!! :) I was blessed to know most of my greats. It's a gift that you have the stories, many don't have even that little bit. Thank you for sharing her with me, with us.
LM.....I had more to say! I was typing!
What a beautiful painting...and wonderful that you have such stories to share!
I was fortunate enough to know my great grandmother. She had what she called the dickens in her eyes. she knew of certain things to come. It seemed to be a lot more prevalent in the old days when people were not so removed from nature.
Enjoyed the hub. :)
i enjoyed this very much. I actually did a search a few days ago about this very thing. I have a bit of intuition and have had a few premonitions as well. While working on a story (not yet published), I did the search to see if the Cherokee were well known for intuition or prophecy as I do have some Cherokee blood running through my veins. I never actually found anything of the sort, but I see that, in your Great-grandmother's case, it was actually true.
A wonderful tale and moving. Thank you for sharing something so personal.
Tom, that painting is wonderful, as is your story. Coincidentally, my great grandmother was also a Cherokee. She was an herb doctor in North Carolina. So looks like there's quite a bit of Cherokee blood running through the veins of hubberland folks.
Unfortunately, I don't even know her name. I've tried going the geological route, but always end up with nothing. My mother used to tell us about her, but my mother died before I became interested in our geneology. And I have no written documents to refer to.
Very nice story. I can imagine how good it would have made a lady like that feel to get that stone. It was probably one of the best gifts of her life.
Thank you for that beautiful story! My great-great grandmother was full Blackfoot. Your title grabbed me.
Inspiring. I worry a little about the sixth generation not being prayed for.....hmmm
What a blessing she was to your family...wonderful hub enjoyed reading. As long as we are on God's side we have nothing to worry about just others that are not.
definitely would have enjoyed meeting her...I can only imagine the conversations...we need people now in our lives who are somehow attuned to a higher source...seems to be so much confusion and misdirection and misinformation..it surely seems we are rapidly nearing a nexus..a cross if u will...when we are going to be presented with a choice..her message sounds hopeful though in that your grandchildren would be here with Jesus and know peace...peace, if only we can find our way there....then, and only then, we can solve all the problems plaguing humanity...
my prayer has always been to let there be peace...
and so i say unto thee..."let there be peace"
peace brother....thanks for linking us with this spiritual woman and recognizing that you are her messenger...
this relation(your great grandmother and the relating(telling) of these facts) has provided a sense of peace for me....that is how I sense...I can't know something without feeling it first...
people need to know and recognize that when a spiritual battle is engaged the war is within...a dark, demonic, seductive presence will attempt to harvest your soul and you will stand alone unless you can call to an ally to assist you..and then you will need to fight tooth and nail..nowdays it seems that we have lost our link to our spiritual allies...our backs are exposed...we are vulnerable...
I sense that when we are in emotional turmoil that the battle is engaged..that is our spirit alerting us to the danger...God help the unknowing soul...we see the results all around us...I feel that the horrible occurences we all bear witness to are spiritual battles lost.
this physical world is filled with distraction...surrounding us and lulling us....and capturing us...tempting us with rewards that will never be satisfying...setting us on a path towards self destruction.
each and everyone of us has a choice...give up or fight...no one has ever said that it would be easy....but it has been said that you can be victorious.
march to the beat(your heart) of a different drummer(yourself, your soul, your spirit).
take the path where no one goes(find yourself, get in touch with yourself).
our bodies are a temple of a spirit....whenever 2 or more are gathered in his name....there is a house of God made, it's not a man made building constructed to satisfy our physical senses...that is why people feel the hollowness therein...all this distraction...all this mumbo jumbo...
great grandma sure knew where the church was...she sure knew who to send for the rock to build the church...or should I say felt first so that she could understand?
There was a woman long ago
Who knelt in prayer and learned to know
I hearkened to a sound I heard
And now I feel that I have learned
Her blood was of the Cherokee
Upon the wind she spoke to me
I heard a knocking on the wall
Persistent in it's gentle call
You long to set your spirit free
The wind it soughed so soothingly
Despite a storm encompassing
That raged around me endlessly
A gift I have to offer thee
This gift is filled with bravery
This gift is known as gallantry
For now I pause to catch my breath
To ponder as I gather rest
Pursuant of the noble quest
It seems I've passed another test
How fortunate I feel myself to be
To have met a woman Cherokee
Who spanned the ages long ago
To come to me and let me know....
Tom,
I know u r a musician..sound travels in waves that continue on endlessly...even when our normal sense of hearing cannot grasp them...I feel that we are all given a gift from God to use or abuse...the choice is ours...we are truly free if we choose to be. My gift is empathy. I am an empath. I can sense emotion, feelings that emanate from the heart and beat on and on...I accept this gift unquestioningly and endlessly struggle to use it righteously..
bottom line...feel free to utilize any of my words while song writing...edit, rearrange, whatever...I don't feel they are mine to possess..I FEEL THEY ARE GIVEN TO ME... and meant to be freely shared..
I am a rock and roller but have known many musicians who can speak from any style...it's a matter of expressing feelings through sound waves....
One of my favorite country cats is a dude named John Prine who had to build his own studio somewhere in Indiana because Nashville didn't feel he conformed to their prescribed confines..Man what fools those money grubbing idiots are.....the guy is an incredible talent.
anyways, I do go on and on...they haven't of yet manufactured the muzzle that is capable of masking my mouth...
4 now...I wish u peace and love and inspiration and will continue to look forward to your forthcoming hubs.
Triplet Mom.....thanks...we could be related. :)
Ivorwen...thank youmuch! :)
Laughing Mom...Thanks...I do love my heratige. :)

Candie...thanks...I am very grateful. :)
Feline Prophet...thank you. :)
Paper Moon....I know what you mean...the distractions have all but ruined our spiritual insight. Thank you much! :)
Connie...good luck in your search...I'm sure there are other stories out there...passed down through families. Thanks....much! :)
rallenbrewster.....Thank you! :)
alekhouse....thank you...maybe you could research your grandfather's last name....many preachers of the old days listed the folks they married. Thanks again and good luck! :)
Pete...thank you....yes...one of the best gifts. :)
Lady Rogue....Thanks....there seems to be a lo tof Native American blood of Hubpages! :)
Advisor4qb...thanks...I wouldn't worry about the 6th. She didn't feel the need to pray for them....they would be OK. :)
Gifted Grandma....thank your...your name is fitting.. :)
John....what can I say but what you wrote was beautiful. The comments and poetry was as if my grandmother's spirit was woven in the words. We are truly...brothers of the soul.
I have fought so long and hard that my angels are thankful for the time to rest. My demons only bore me now....they have nothing new and I flick them off the arm of my soul like fleas. I am sure you can relate.
I love John Prine's music. I met him once in Gnashville....We rented an aprtment from his wife.
Peace to you also! And thank you...so very much! :)
Great Hub, Tom; very moving!
Loved this story,--you have proven a simple stone can be the greatest gift of---LOVE.
cool brother...I"m thankful 4 the connections...if we can all reconnect we can make a better world...it is an irrefutable fact that we are all linked together through our ancestors..we just need to let their spirits draw us together...I feel them all around..but we must invite them to join us...they are good spirits and won't intrude upon us but will try to catch our attention...but it is upon us to invite them in...they but await an invitation...thankfully they are ever present, awaiting our hospitality..
peace
Common Thred....thank you! :)
Ginn...thank you....yes it can. :)
John.....what you said above really hits the heart of what the world could gain.. My wife, Tammy, and I got to auctions sometimes. We see family pictures, old Military medals and uniforms being sold by families in estate auctions.
It is like people don't care at all about their history. I wish people would pass down stories, pictures and things to their grandchildren. It would help them make the connection and help them throughout life.
So true that they are ever present. It ony takes a thought and they return to us. Thanks....and...peace.
This hub explains a lot, I now see where you get your story telling ability from and your loving ways. Your Great Grandmother is a continuing blessing not just to you and yours but through you and yours (especially since you nearly all write on hubpages) all who read your hubpages and those who know you personally also receive the fruit of this blessing.
What a wise women she was. Very beautifully written.
dori
maggs...thanks so much for what you said...you are a lady with a wonderful heart.....thanks again! :)
fortunrep.....dori.....thank you.....there are many very wise women in my family...I have learned from them all. :)
Great Hub, Tom; very moving
Lgali.....thank you much! :)
The indian people are a very special promised people as as the Isrealites. The Book of Mormon has many prophecies and promises that God made to the ancestors of our modern day Indian descendents. They are very spiritual people.
Keep on hubbing!
eovery..thanks....I didn't know that. I will get the Book of Mormon and check it out. I have studied many religions and a little of the Mormons through pamphlets. Thanks again! :)
Yeah, You can receive a free copy of the Book of Mormon by completing a simple online form or by calling 1-888-537-7111. You can read the Book of Mormon online, too, at mormon.org
If you order one, the missionaries will deliver it to you, and explain a lot about it.
eovery.....thanks....I will check it out. :)
Tom,
I love this Hub. My paternal great grandmother was a full blooded Cherokee. My maternal grandmother was a prophetess who foretold many events in the lives of her loved ones, so I can definitely relate to your beautifully told story. Thank you for sharing it.
James...thanks so much....The people of those days were of such a deep faith. It is wonderful that they could relate to us through prophecy. Thanks again.
Very, Very interesting, and very, very nice. Thank you, by the way, for commenting on my blog and becoming a fan.
